5.0 out of 5 stars Vikings - superlative drama, 12 Feb. 2015

Really excellent. The finale utterly wrong-footed me and, yet, I felt that the drama was wholly contextual. Superb performances from Floki, Ragnar and Rollo. The odd - utterly - beautiful set up shot and generally gritty rural aesthetic - strong female characters. This is brilliant television

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly good crime drama, 31 Jan. 2015
This review is from: Ray Donovan (DVD)
Excellent crime drama with superb acting. Stuffed full of great performances - Jon Voight, in particular, but everyone bringing their A game. Not as good as it's obvious antecedents - The Sopranos, Sons of Anarchy - as you do not care as much about the characters as you do in those shows, but really brilliant show. Can't wait to see the next series. Complete quality drama.

This review is from: Cambridge Spies (DVD)
A parade of English acting talent does the very British story of the Cambridge Spies in a Peter Moffat-penned mini-series from just over a decade ago. It's not bad, but the first half is nowhere near as good - or as sumptuous - as Another Country and the second half is sort of a soapy second division John Le Carre. Guy Burgess is a peach of a role and Tom Hollander follows where Alan Bates and Rupert Everett led in making this Great British Eccentric hypnotic on screen, but the script is just not incisive enough to help Philby, Blunt and MacLean come across as much. My own view is that Philby was an utter rat and yet he's played like some kind of well-intentioned hero by Toby Stephens. There is a much better TV series to be made about this lot

5.0 out of 5 stars Superbly wonderful brilliant show, 21 Jan. 2015
This review is from: Justified - Season 5 (DVD)
This is Justified. It is amazingly wonderful. The dialogue just......hums. Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder are two of the best TV characters created in the last ten years and Olyphant and Goggins play them with consummate skill. Regrets? Not enough Raylan gun play (it is what he does) and too much Ava in prison, which was kind of dull. However, five stars - oh God yes

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic martial arts bash'em'up, 17 Aug. 2014
This review is from: The Raid 2 (DVD)
NOT as good as the first film, but pretty damn amazing. I wasn't always sure who was who and why they were trying to kill each other, but the fight choreography was superb - genuinely visually stunning. There was a tendency of people to get in a line to get killed when - mebbe - coming forward as group would have been a better strategy and it was all as meaningful as a packet of Rich Tea biscuits, but great - just great. Not five star great, but great anyway

Always Managing: My Autobiography
Always Managing: My Autobiography
by Harry Redknapp
Edition: Paperback
Price: £3.85

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, pacy read, 23 Jun. 2014
I enjoyed the book and read it quickly. I am a Spurs fan - and hold no particular brief for Redknapp whose mercenary instincts are clear despite all the 'cheeky chappie' bunk put in here - but I found the insights into the real world of football dealings interesting.

You would have to have a heart of granite to not sympathise for a man who lost a close friend in a horror accident during Italia 90 and whose career peaked at West Ham and was curtailed by injury issues. He is brutally honest about his limitations as a player - citing the (immortal) Bill Nicholson, who branded him as a winger who never scored. However, even though he professes brutal honesty, the description of his trial and his 'courting' of the England job do not ring true at all. Is Harry Rednapp an utter moron? I don't think so, but when it came to the 'secret account' that was pretty much his defence. The guy was acquitted, but read this and the simple question you find in your head is 'why' Read it - make your own judgement.

This is not an utterly ghost-written-out-of-existence sport autobiography and the real 'Arry - leaning out of the car window and chatting to Sky Sports News - can be heard so I would urge fans to buy this rather than - say - Rooney's lame output, but at the end, I liked him less
