4.0 out of 5 stars Appropriately looney tunes, 26 Feb. 2016

This review is from: Terminator - Genisys (DVD)
I was very pleasantly surprised by this addition to the Terminator franchise. I had read the poor reviews and Sarah Connor looked nothing like the Khaleesi (disappointingly), but it was a whole heap of fun. When you get to fourth sequels, one is not expecting The Battleship Potemkin or Citizen Kane, but fun is good. At all the comedy bits, I laughed - putting this film above a dreadful amount of comedies I've seen. I loved the recreations of The Terminator (number 1) at the beginning and the action scenes were pretty cool if lacking in any real threat.

I really enjoyed 'The Sarah Connor Chronicles' on TV, so mebbe was a lot more amenable to all the time line shenanigans. But this is a real giggle. Enjoy

Enjoyable for a while, especially with Comrade Corbyn in the news, but palls reasonably quickly as it all turns out to be a huge conspiracy. This may have been radical back in 1988, but the posturing of the 'Left' now looks silly. (Check out that Home Secretary - annoying.) McAnally is great and seeing Keith Allen so young gives you a jolt, but it's not exactly Tinker, Tailor

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun and grisly executions, 12 Mar. 2015

Interesting series - heavy on the dramatic reconstructions, light on the talking heads save the presenter Dan Jones. Dan jumps over the more successful kings - Edward I, Edward III - to focus on the rotters or just rotten at being King; Henry III, Edward II and Richard II. It's all tremendous fun, though not exactly Simon Scharma in it's approach. We liked it

5.0 out of 5 stars Vikings - superlative drama, 12 Feb. 2015

Really excellent. The finale utterly wrong-footed me and, yet, I felt that the drama was wholly contextual. Superb performances from Floki, Ragnar and Rollo. The odd - utterly - beautiful set up shot and generally gritty rural aesthetic - strong female characters. This is brilliant television

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly good crime drama, 31 Jan. 2015
This review is from: Ray Donovan (DVD)
Excellent crime drama with superb acting. Stuffed full of great performances - Jon Voight, in particular, but everyone bringing their A game. Not as good as it's obvious antecedents - The Sopranos, Sons of Anarchy - as you do not care as much about the characters as you do in those shows, but really brilliant show. Can't wait to see the next series. Complete quality drama.

This review is from: Cambridge Spies (DVD)
A parade of English acting talent does the very British story of the Cambridge Spies in a Peter Moffat-penned mini-series from just over a decade ago. It's not bad, but the first half is nowhere near as good - or as sumptuous - as Another Country and the second half is sort of a soapy second division John Le Carre. Guy Burgess is a peach of a role and Tom Hollander follows where Alan Bates and Rupert Everett led in making this Great British Eccentric hypnotic on screen, but the script is just not incisive enough to help Philby, Blunt and MacLean come across as much. My own view is that Philby was an utter rat and yet he's played like some kind of well-intentioned hero by Toby Stephens. There is a much better TV series to be made about this lot

5.0 out of 5 stars Superbly wonderful brilliant show, 21 Jan. 2015
This review is from: Justified - Season 5 (DVD)
This is Justified. It is amazingly wonderful. The dialogue just......hums. Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder are two of the best TV characters created in the last ten years and Olyphant and Goggins play them with consummate skill. Regrets? Not enough Raylan gun play (it is what he does) and too much Ava in prison, which was kind of dull. However, five stars - oh God yes

Hugely enjoyable ships'n'Ancient Greece'n'blood time waster. It ain't Citizen Kane, but I loved it - great fight scenes and - unlike the original - was on ships! Doupleplusgood
