5.0 out of 5 stars A Noir Mystery Gem, 29 Oct. 2014
"Laura" is one of the best examples of the classic noir mystery novel. The story itself and the writing are equally captivating. The characters are well fleshed out. "Laura's" plotline is colorful as well as complex, but not too difficult to follow. The big screen adaptation of "Laura" is much better known than the book. I saw the film before I read the book but even though I knew the outcome, I greatly enjoyed the novel. It is just as glamorous and entertaining as the iconic film. This is a fascinating read for mystery lovers and fans of popular fiction in general.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun for a Whodunit Fan, 25 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Murder By Death [DVD] (DVD)
As a fan of classic whodunit, I enjoyed this movie. It was funny and entertaining. There were a lot of inside jokes pertaining to mystery films series like The Thin Man, Charlie Chan, and Miss Marple that were fun for a fan of the genre but may not be appreciated by mainstream viewers. It's almost worth watching just for the sensational cast which includes: David Niven, Peter Sellers, Maggie Smith, Peter Falk and many more notables.

Dear Cary
Dear Cary
by Dyan Cannon
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Disillusioning Read about Life with a Legend, 28 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Dear Cary (Hardcover)
Dyan Cannon's memoir of her life with Cary Grant is a very well written, colorful and insightful read. There are a lot of surprising and disillusioning things that will change the image fans of Cary Grant have of who he was as a person. While his flaws are exposed so are some of the tragic reasons behind the flaws. For better or worst readers will see this screen legend in a much more human light. The book is an entertaining, captivating, easy read centering on one of the most famous celebrity couples of all time.

The Virgin and the Gipsy

3.0 out of 5 stars A Provocative Tale, 13 Mar. 2014
As with D.H. Lawrence's most famous books, this novella is a very passionate read. The central character Yvette Saywell is the free-spirited but sheltered daughter of a village rector in early twentieth century England. Longing for excitement and resisting the pressure to conform to her family's expectations, Yvette begins an affair with a charismatic gipsy. Although this is a sensual story that focuses on forbidden romance, it is also very much about Yvette's desire to break free of society's conventions, and the process of self-discovery. This is a compelling and unique story that fans of D.H. Lawrence will appreciate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Provocative and Well-researched, 5 Feb. 2014
This is an amazingly detailed and thorough book about the production and cultural impact of the classic film "All About Eve". The author's encyclopedic knowledge of the film and spin off projects, such as the hit Broadway play "Applause" is no less than astounding. This is an entertaining and revealing read and a genuine treasure for real fans of the film. At times the book becomes very technical and it does tend to drags in places as a result of being so detailed. The chapters on the filming of the movie are definitely the juiciest and most fun to read. Over all, it's a very interesting and colorful book. I recommend it to classic film fans and particularly fans of "All About Eve"

4.0 out of 5 stars Tender and Moving, 31 Jan. 2014
I loved this film and felt that it should've received more attention. This is a beautiful and romantic story, reminiscent of a fairy tale. There is something magical and enchanting about the atmosphere and the relationship between the the two central characters. Beyond passionate love, is a compelling storyline that delves into the intolerance and judgmental nature of society. Aesthetically stunning and well directed this film is a true gem. The performances by the stars and the supporting cast are very impressive. Rachel Weisz playing Amy, the female lead, is particularly convincing. I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys romances.

A Christmas Story: The Book That Inspired the Hilarious Classic Film
by Shepherd Jean
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £13.99

4.0 out of 5 stars As Funny and Endearing as the Movie, 21 Dec. 2013
This anthology, which served as the basis for the popular family film, is just as witty and clever as one would expect. Irreverent at times an charmingly nostalgic at other points, this book will appeal to fans of the film. Jean Shepherd was an a great humorist and his unique talent comes shining through in this collection. This is also a refreshing alternative to some of the more sentimental Christmas themed books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vibrant Sound, 5 Nov. 2012
This review is from: Take The Crown (MP3 Download)
Most of the tracks on this album have a trendy quality but the album as a whole is not superficial. Many of the tracks are very moving. The songs have a distinct vibrancy. Even the more introspective ballads are alive and energetic. My favorite tracks are "Be a Boy", "Candy" which is very catchy, "Hunting for You", and probably the most passionate song "Different". One song that I thought was over-produced was "Hey Wow Yeah Yeah". The song "Losers" doesn't quite fit in with the other tracks, it has more of an indie, singer/songwriter sound. Over all, "Take the Crown" is a very good album.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Pop Album, 16 Oct. 2012
This review is from: Glassheart (MP3 Download)
Leona Lewis always sounds great. Her soulful voice has so much range, which she demonstrated again on this album. "Glassheart" has more of a techno sound than her other albums but it works on most of the tracks. My favorite songs are "Un Love Me", "Come Alive" which is a sweeping, dramatic song that sounds like it could be from a James Bond movie, "I To You" also very dramatic, "Favorite Scar", "When it Hurts" and "Trouble". I highly recommend this album.
