Awakening

Edition: Paperback

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 5 Aug. 2016

This review is from: Awakening (Paperback)
I usually engage with Ms Bolton's characters, but this book had me forgetting who anyone was, and I even forgot the name of our heroine. As always, it seems to be meticulously researched, but I got the impression that the author wanted to write about snakes, and then came up with a not very credible character and a far from credible plot. I struggled to finish it, which is a shame because I am an admirer of her work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid like the plague!, 8 July 2016

This is appallingly badly written rubbish, with cardboard cut out characters, including a deformed monster, and a storyline that makes no sense at all. It could have been written by a 14 year old as a summer project.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisitely written story, 14 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I cannot recall why I bought this book. I am not generally enthralled by female authors. I would have avoided 13th century Middle Eastern fables like the plague. I would certainly have avoided a story about a disillusioned, middle aged Jewish housewife in middle class America. And I would have run a mile from any book that could be called a "romance".
However, I found myself completely engrossed in a beautifully written novel that cleverly interweaves the present day and the 13th century. I shall have to rethink my criteria for buying books.

1.0 out of 5 stars Turgid nonsense., 7 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: J: A Novel (Paperback)
Oh dear! What unmitigated rubbish. It is impossible to imagine what was going through Jacobson's head when he started writing this turgid nonsense. I enjoyed his earlier work, and tolerated most of his later work, although he did create some memorably misogynistic characters, usually Jewish, since Jacobson is obsessed by being Jewish. Perhaps it is time for him to stop writing altogether. This feels like a creative writing course challenge that has gone badly wrong, but the publishers decided to go ahead and publish anyway, because Jacobson is a biggish name.

2.0 out of 5 stars Elegantly written, but completely unengaging., 3 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A Little Life (Paperback)
I don't usually give up on books, but I gave up on this, 20% into the book. I was reading on Kindle, so don't know how many pages that is. It felt as though I had been reading for weeks, but I still had no idea who the characters were. The actual writing is excellent, and very elegant, but the characterisation is very weak and I was completely unable to visualise any of the characters. In fact, I suddenly realised that one character was black, possibly more than one, but that had not registered. Needless to say, I was completely unengaged with any of them.

The Narrow Road to the Deep North
The Narrow Road to the Deep North
by Richard Flanagan
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.29

5.0 out of 5 stars An emotional masterpiece, 13 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a masterpiece. I have not been so deeply moved by a book for a long time. I literally wept at certain points. The description of the Japanese inhumanity to the POWs is shocking and, I am certain, not exaggerated in any way. However, the author also tries to get inside the Japanese psyche, to explain their abhorrent behaviour. However, ultimately the book is about love, and the complexities of many different types of love. It is beautifully, and wonderfully, written.

1.0 out of 5 stars Smart title - hideous book!, 28 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am astonished by the other positive reviews of this drivel. It is essentially a number of fairly hard core porn scenes (rape, incest, BDSM) held together with a ludicrous plot. I was seduced by the clever title, but the book is hideous. I gave up after a third of the book, and deleted from my Kindle. I felt distinctly grubby having had it on my Kindle. I would not like to meet Mr Walker or his admirers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just words on a page., 24 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very little of this book made any sense to me,and I was constantly confused by the characters. I could not tell the difference between the journalist and the private investigator. This is because this book is the second part of a trilogy. I did read the first part, but I have probably read fifty books since. Mr Barclay assumes that the reader will remember the characters from the first book. He certainly does not bother to give the reader any sense of what they are like. As a consequence, one does not engage with the characters in any way. Any reader should be able to visualise the people that he is reading about. Not in this case!
