4.0 out of 5 stars She is her usual wonderful, beautiful self, 20 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There is only one reason I bought this film: Barbara Shelley. She is her usual wonderful, beautiful self.
As for Spike Milligan, he is pleasant in an innocent sort of way. Typical knock-about British comedy of
it's era; low budget with plenty of silly music and slapstick sequences. My only gripe really is the picture
quality, it is very average and looks no better than VHS quality.

My expectations were low, and I was pleasantly surprised that the plot kept me
so emotionally involved right to the end. Some intriguing twists to this story and
a very strong cast. Barbara Shelley is the best actress Britain had in those days.
She had brains, beauty and that sultry voice. Never seen Lee Patterson before,
and he did impress me with his sincerity...its great that these films are so freely
available now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth It At Any Price, 8 Aug. 2015

If you had to live on a desert island with only one book about English horror cinema (and TV),
this is the one you take. Mr Rigby hits it on all levels. He is erudite without being pretentious.
He goes directly to the point, straightening out vague concepts championed by other authors
such as David Pirie. He is always firm but fair in his analysis. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A One Woman Tour de Force, 30 July 2015

This review is from: Cat Girl [DVD] (DVD)
Barbara Shelley is the most beautiful actress in the history of cinema in my opinion.
Anything she appears in is worth watching. Her emotional range was tremendous too.
She could lose all control in a poetic way. That sultry voice was another bonus. For her
fabulous presence alone, I give this a perfect rating. But Cat Girl suffers in the script/
directing/budget department. The film is flat and episodic. It has that post-war, ration book
feel to it. We could be watching a television play. If only the director had been Terence Fisher
or someone on his level, and the finale more powerfully staged, and this could have been one
of the great horror pictures of the 1950s. But it is a classic because of one woman's resonance.

5.0 out of 5 stars TV History-Buy It!, 23 Aug. 2014

Superb in every way. What actors England had to call on in the 1980s.
Jeremy Brett is the best Holmes possible.Same with David Burke and
Edward Hardwicke as Dr Watson.
One of the greatest tv series of all time. There is so much to enjoy: the
scenery, Victorian London, classy dialogue and top notch supporting
actors.Conan Doyle would be proud.

2.0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money, 23 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had high hopes for this series because I'm a fan of 60s/70s British TV.
Unfortunately the budget is too cheap for it to be anything more
than the cast staring intently at each other.Compared to Brian Clemens
Thriller or the Armchair Thriller series, this is nothing. The shabby sets, painfully
slow 'plots' and poor camerawork make for a depressing experience.

If you like horror-fantasy stories from the 50s, then this is for you.
My favourite tales are "Frozen Fear" "A Good Imagination" and
"Terror In The Night".There are a number of science fiction stories
too.Bloch seems to be in his element when a plot revolves around crime
rather than the supernatural.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating slice of TV history, 29 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Edward Woodward is one of the few actors that can play a spy with a painful conscience. His acting has
an exuberant depression about it.I love old British TV series and this is strong drama, although the low budget sets may not appeal to everyone. This is the kitchen sink opposite to the Avengers,Danger Man and other expensive 1960's TV series.
Anthony Valentine also deserves a special mention for his charismatic prescence.I've taken a star off because
this black and white era of Callan looks so cheap compared to the later, more realistic colour stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good way to while away the time, 26 April 2013

Tom Baker has a superb baritone voice, that lends itself nicely to this adventure
story.A pity that he has to convey the whole story alone.Sound effects and a little
music would make this even more enjoyable.Still, one of the more believable Dr Who plots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Hammer Film Of Them All, 26 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This science fiction drama is a masterpiece. The dialogue and characters build the tension
in a way that make it seem more like a documentary. The special effects are excellent.
Rarely did Hammer make use of sound so effectively as here. The picture quality is fantastic,
Barbara Shelley is gorgeous while Andrew Keir turns in a winning performance.
