5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant spy/adventure story along the lines of John Buchan, 13 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Brilliant spy/adventure story along the lines of John Buchan. The plot twists and turns and it's only in the penultimate chapter that the reader discovers finally what the riddle actually is. Many blind alleys, false clues and frustrating 'detective' work give a sense of reality to the novel - the heroes don't just 'discover' the secret and pursue it to it's conclusion.

My only frustration was with the wealth of technical sailing jargon that abounds though in fairness to the author many terms are explained for the non-sailing reader!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting 'who-dunnit' with a clever twist in the tail, 18 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Interesting 'who-dunnit' with a clever twist in the tail. The action all takes place in a country house and investigation by police & amateur sleuth narrows it down to two guests, neither of which the reader wants to be the perpetrator. Lots of blind alleys and twists and turns - the solution, in true 1930s style, is only revealed in the final chapter.

I will certainly read more from this author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly funny and still pertinent, 6 April 2015

This review is from: Honeywood File (Paperback)
I bought this for my son who has just qualified as an architect having seen it recommended on Amazon.

A brilliant book - extremely funny and apt even though the procedures are a bit dated compared with todays computerised practice. Although it is aimed at young architects setting out in practice the lessons are pertinent to many professions.

The sequel 'The Honeywood Settlement' is I think even more hilarious but with good advice and warnings. The set is well worth having.

Very interesting and entertaining overview of how language evolved during WWI. New words and words that changed their meaning as well as the use & misuse of military slang by those at home and on the front.

Never have a problem with any Elizabeth Goudge novels. With this purchase I think I have completed the set.

She is a wonderful writer, drawing one into a story within pages of the start. The characters are carefully described and the way she writes enables the reader to really understand where they are coming from and why they act the way they do. It's always a sad moment when a novel is finished.

I have not fully read this yet as it was purchased more for reference. However, in dipping in I was pleased to see how readable it is. I haven't read much Walter Scott and this is the first of his poetry I've looked at. The Kindle publication is well done.

We watched this when it was first screened by the BBC in 1979 and were pleased to be able to purchase a DVD copy to watch during the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI. There are some limited 'special features' which provide some background information on Vera Brittain.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book to settle down by the Christmas fire and ..., 15 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the third book in Mavis Hay's set of murder mystery books and follows the classic formula of the country house murder. As in the others the clues are buried in the timing of events. The style is clever in that it is written in the form of journals produced by various members of the house party. In each of her three books Mavis Hay's style is different and that makes them an ideal set to read and re-read.

A great book to settle down by the Christmas fire and read - unless of course you are having Santa Klaus to visit!
