Mina Quasi Jannacci

5.0 out of 5 stars Reborn splendid Jannacci songs with orchestra and top interpreter Mina, 27 Oct. 2013
This review is from: Mina Quasi Jannacci (Audio CD)
A collection of great songs by the influential Italian singer-songwriter Enzo Jannacci, (sometimes in regional dialect), completely reborn in versions and interpretations by the living legend singer Mina and the excellent orchestrator maestro Gianni Ferrio.

The opener "Rino" is a short, tender, then ever so powerful and passionately growing musical jewel, showing what a fantastic singer Mina is.
Strong melodies like "E l'era tardi" (with 'spoken' participation of Jannacci himself) and the unforgettable "La sera che parti' mio padre" (a touching anti-war song), are likely to stay on your mind for weeks!

"Saxophone" is playful and with a bigband style, as Jannacci had a jazz background himself.
The socially themed "Vincenzina e la fabbrica" and "E sa ve' " are sensitive masterpieces (although not for every average listener) with refined orchestral arrangements by conductor Ferrio.
"Tira a campa' " reminds me of circus grandeur. "Vita vita" was used as the main theme on the soundtrack of the film "Gran bollito" (Black Journal). Closing track "Ecco tutto qui" becomes a typical grand 70's Mina classic.
What a combination of talent here! This conceptual tribute album is a timeless musical accomplishment!

5.0 out of 5 stars To SING and breathe poetry: an intense experience, 4 April 2013
'Al Cantar a Manuel' is a heart touching tribute to the inspiring poetry of Manuel Alcántara. Mayte Martín wrote music to 12 poems of his, this way really telling stories, and evocating a world of thought and feeling and memory.
The first and the last song have the same (strong) melody, but (obviously) another poem as lyrics - so the cycle is completed. What a wonderful project, a concept album, a very nice unity.

In the booklet, each poem is there accompanied with an English translation. I find it a world to discover! There are also references to other poets (who lived in difficult times).

The music is refined, intimate, dignified, as it is appropriate for poems, where each word is meaningful, and also intense, or it wouldn't be (southern) Spanish and Mayte Martin!
It is in a way different again from her other albums, but it is definitely the same haunting singer that we know from 'Tiempo de amar'. The voice of love, sorrow and passion, that fantastic vocal and breath control which, with its withheld tension and yearning, works on the listener's soul. I would call this almost organic music, meaning: in connection with the earth - songs flow like a caressing wind.
This album is at first listening perhaps not the most important for jumping out, extraordinary melodies, but all the more for the general atmosphere. Although a melody like "Al Sur De Los Limones"; I just can't get it out of my mind! Later you realize that there isn't a single bad song.
The tender and touching "Niño Del 40" (Child of 1940) takes you on a journey to another world, even if you don't understand the poetic lyrics. The composition and rhythm of "A Miguel Hernández" are rather original.

She sings with a flamenco (trained) voice, but this is not really all a flamenco album. There is also a tango by the way. Guitar(s) and violin are the main instruments used. Even the violin "sings" (For instance on the beautiful "Le gustaban pocas cosas"), perhaps sometimes on-the-edge-sugar-sweet, but what could be wrong with some sweetness?

I call this perfect Sunday music - not that you can only play it on Sundays, but in the way that it makes every day you listen to it, a special day! High quality and sensitive beauty in a tough world. I'm in love with this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent saxophonist brings the best of Brazil together, 5 Jan. 2013

This review is from: Sabe Voce (Audio CD)
A wonderful, celebrated saxophonist collaborating with some of the best of Brazil's musicians, singers AND some of the greatest Brazilian classic tunes and composers : that can't be wrong!

Brazil is famous for its rich musical treasures. There's no less than Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ary Barroso, Baden Powell, Carlos Lyra, Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso as composers on this album. The latter two also sing here.

Some of Brazil's best singer(-songwriter)s perform a song here that is not their own, yet a timeless standard : Milton Nascimento interprets in his own style Jobim's "Por Causa de Você". And Caetano Veloso sings my favourite: a haunting melancholic "Chove Lá Fora" (It's Raining Outside) : both Veloso and Gandelman do a fantastic job here!

If you think that Brazil offers only carnival music, there is still a lot to learn. The mood here is mostly romantic, slow, rich and jazzy.

Video clips from this recording project (check youtube) were filmed in tasteful black&white image.
Leo Gandelman plays soprano, alto and tenor saxes, and boy, he knows how to!
Not very easy to get this album, but I just had to, and now I cherish it!

4.0 out of 5 stars classy album, coherent melancholic mood, perfect background music on a grey day, 5 Jan. 2013

This review is from: Let's Go Out Tonight (Audio CD)
I haven't listened to this album multiple times yet, but I can immediately say this : it's like a concept album, having clearly intended, a remarkable unity in its style and atmosphere, which is slow and melancholic.

I have found only one personal top favourite song so far : the hauntingly beautiful title track (not as festive as the title suggest). Therefor I give no 5 stars.
Yet it IS a strong album, for it's coherence and overall mood. Perfect background, for instance on a grey day.
Curtis Stigers remains a very good singer, accompanied by excellent musicians, tastefully "converting" a broad selection of songs into his own style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blue and great flirting swing atmospheres of Toots on guitar!, 18 July 2010
This review is from: Blues Pour Flirter (Audio CD)
Toots Thielemans, not only THE master of harmonica playing, but also known for his whistling, started as a guitarist. On this album from 1961, recorded in Paris, the world famous Belgian jazz legend, plays with this occasional quartet a fine guitar and very enjoyable jazz to me.
Lovely atmospheres!!
Interesting to hear his work, even before he wrote Bluesette, before he made his star records with Quincy Jones, although already having been in the US in the '40's.

My favourite tracks are: "Bag's Groove", "We'll be Together Again", and his wonderfully swinging own composition "Le trottoir".
"Satin doll" is an adorable interpretation too!
He whistles an irresistible tune on "Honeysuckle Rose", which makes you feel happy!

Booklet commenter Alain Tercinet says that on quite a few tracks of this album, Toots proves to honour his credo : "Playing means expressing yourself, trying to add something to a melody that already exists".

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic new bossa, 22 Mar. 2007
This review is from: Interior (Audio CD)
Absolutely delightful "new" bossa nova!

Marcio Faraco is a very talented artist, with a beautiful voice.

Wonderful rhytms and "warm" atmosphere with a melancholic feel (the title is an obvious reference). Yet this music is sunny too.

Many terrific songs, but "O Sobrevivente" is my favourite.

I'm so glad that I discovered this album of great quality, it is one of my most treasured cd's!

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Original artist, new definition of "easy listening", 30 Oct. 2006
This review is from: Careless Love (Audio CD)
When I heard Peyroux' delicious tempo on her re-interpretation of "J'ai deux amours" and those delightful piano sounds on it, I was lost.

And who would dare to cover Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love"? But she succeeds and makes it her own.

Madeleine Peyroux has a marvellous "timeless" voice that brings you in another world or time. She creates a wonderful, warm and smooth jazzy atmosphere, with a country touch, indeed like Norah Jones, despite many differences too. And the occasional hammond organ is adorable!

Yet let's not forget that you either adore or hate this kind of voice, there is no way in between.

Many sweeeeet songs, not necessarily world class, but highly entertaining nevertheless. Redefines "EASY listening": very easy and pleasing to the ear. Always gives me a happy feeling!

But the top of all for me is "I'll Look Around", a touching superslow jazz ballad with remarkable phrasing, which, in my opinion, beats Billie Holiday's original! And I'd like to mention the very nice lyrics of this song too!

4.0 out of 5 stars What a voice!, 29 Oct. 2006

What a voice!

Ebb tide : most intense version ever heard!

Un Anno D'Amore : the ultimate diva! Also recorded by Luz Casal.

Brava : THE song to show her skills: crazy technique, crystal clear high notes and super-fast, with big band!

Searching for a comparison, only the young wondrous Barbra Streisand comes to mind. Impressive!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep heart-felt Balkan blues and top class gipsy songs, 29 Oct. 2006
The queen of Balkan blues returned! Her performance on this comeback album surely shows the world why, in former Yugoslavia, she was referred to as the 'Gypsy Ella Fitzgerald' and the 'Billie Holiday of Gypsy Music', but mostly she was called lovingly the 'Mother of Gypsy Soul'.

Beautiful melodies. And then interpreted by that deep touching voice, what a diva!!

What stories these musicians have! Coming from a torn country and a culture of longing.

Masterfully accompanied by top class band Mostar Sevdah Reunion.

Highly inspiring atmosphere, a true discovery!
