5.0 out of 5 stars Solid good sense, 3 Nov. 2011
Rob Yeung picked a good topic. And deals with it admirably.

It is a neat little book of practical tools based on current psychological thinking.

No mumbo jumbo - just solid good sense.

Managing The Professional Service Firm
Managing The Professional Service Firm
by David H. Maister
Edition: Paperback
Price: £13.48

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic on professional firms, 3 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great book. A classic on professional firms.

It is all rather calculating perhaps. And maybe it is less strong on creating the soul (or identity or whatever you want to call it) of a good consulting business or other professional firm. But it is good nonetheless. And I think the advice and suggestions are very sound - from structure to marketing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous, 3 Nov. 2011

How to meditate in just a minute! Great.

It's a great little read - he writes well. Really clarified for me a few things about meditation.

And the one minute practice is a great idea. Although I wasn't able to make it fully part of my daily practice I did learn something really useful from this book - and do sometimes still follow the approach - when I have a minute :)

The Art of Systems Thinking: Essential Skills for Creativity and Problem Solving
The Art of Systems Thinking: Essential Skills for Creativity and Problem Solving
by Joseph O'Connor
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Straightforward introduction, 3 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Straightforward introduction to systems thinking.

My only problem with this book is that it introduces the ideas but I think misses some of the spirit of systems thinking. System thinking in my mind is about whole systems - and this didn't come across to me clearly in the book.

Maybe I am being unfair, I read it quite a few years ago.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really accessible, 3 Nov. 2011
Straightforward and sensible advice for would-be entrepreneurs.

The main thing is the ideas are really accessible - only what can be written on a beermat.

And yet some of the ideas - like the cornerstones model - have stuck in my mind for many years.

Good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 3 Nov. 2011
Brilliant book on our relationships with children. I have the earlier edition.

It is such a good book - and really about a lot more than children. It is also relevant to all of our relationships including our work and business relationships.

So glad a new edition has appeared.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gold dust, 3 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Absolutely marvellous. A great book. To be read over and over!

I really mean that - its very densely packed with great ideas and it takes a while to absorb the lessons, let alone put them into practice.

But real research-based suggestions on this topic are like gold dust,

Fish!: A remarkable way to boost morale and improve results
by Stephen C. Lundin
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars On attitudes, 25 Oct. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A funny little book on attitude.

It's a lovely story of a fish market, used as a way of getting some simple points about attitude across to a perhaps sceptical audience.

Good basic introduction to marketing.
