4.0 out of 5 stars Wood carving, 17 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A good practical start to carving with the 'cunning plan' that when you have carved your first piece you will be hooked. Like all books on specialist subjects one could wish that it went into, in this instance, a more extensive examination of the most suitable wood. However, to do so would cut across the very clear aim to 'introduce' the subject and I would recommend it highly to someone seeking a start point

Medusa of Time: how technology redefines Copenhagen
by T. Lee Baumann
Edition: Paperback
Price: £5.70

1.0 out of 5 stars Clap trap, 17 Mar. 2013

This should not have been published. For a start it dismisses the research of the three of the most distinguished theoretical physicists of the 20th century, Bohm, Born and Von Neumann and then lards the book with standard research findings distorted to fit his theory

5.0 out of 5 stars The low down on high tech calories, 17 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent piece of work in making sense of the metabolism for those following the 5:2 diet, in fact anyone on a diet routine. It neither talks down nor obfuscates with technical obscurantism. In the popular phrase, 'it does what it says on the cover', but I found it most helpful in making sense of much of the dieting folklore including de-bunking some of the old-wives tales associated with dieting - 'why after dieting one can regain the lost weight so quickly'.

In its way it is also a 'good read'

3.0 out of 5 stars Building on a previous success (?), 26 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Richard Koch when writing from his experience as a consultant, has a rich seam to work and his observations ring true, but this book appears to be written at the request of his publisher to build on the previous success and his assertions are a little contrived and did not expand my understanding of the 80/20 thesis. His earlier work took a number of years to 'mature' and benefited from the number of revisions it no doubt went through, this is a pot boiler straight out of the pot.

This is a bedside book that deserves to be there because it condenses experience into a form that enlivens rather than dulls the intellect.

I am not usually greatly interested in biography but this account of the rise of a singular man to a position of great power is captivating

The Origins of Knowledge and Imagination (The Silliman Memorial Lectures Series)

5.0 out of 5 stars Illuminating, 6 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bronowski has an intellect that illuminates everything he addresses and to be fair, I must admit to a bias because he, like Fred Hoyle before him, can go out on a reasoning limb that almost seems unsafe, yet retain a firm grasp of his subject. The breadth of his intellect is in itself a challenge because one must retain a clear view of his reasoning as he develops his thesis and there is none of the fatuous post modern obscurantism

5.0 out of 5 stars A clear eyed view of reality, 6 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The clarity of his view is well conveyed by skilful writing and perspicacity. As Grayling says, there are three separate debates in motion but they are skilfully managed and are drawn together in a telling summary of his views. If this were a book in my library it would be defaced with side lining and underlining galore. It is challenging but well worth the time for those with an enquiring mind

This is not a book but merely a two page soliloquy with a pretentious claim to some form of certainty

2.0 out of 5 stars Pot boiler, 7 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
AMS is a skillful author who obviously enjoys writing as much as I enjoy his delightful characterisations and descriptive passages. There is an exuberance about his writing that one can enjoyably share as an experience. It is for this reason that I feel disgruntled and slightly cheated. AMS should never have offered this to his publisher and his commissioning editor should have politely refused. The plot is ramshackle and the characterisation sketchy when compared with the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency. A great disappointment
