3.0 out of 5 stars Bad writing, good patterns., 21 Feb. 2016

The first question that came to mind, but remained unanswered, was "why only for women?" None of the patterns seem to me to be unusable by men, none of them require use of body parts that men don't have.
Information for other potential purchasers: it's in American terminology. This, one could live with (go and look up conversions for stitch names and some very odd hook sizes), but sadly it seems to have been written by someone whose first language was not English - not even American English. This is awkward and irritating, but doesn't make the patterns unusable.
Despite the faults mentioned, the patterns are clear (once past the rather odd vocabulary), comprehensive, and provide a nice variety of hats, hence this getting a whole three stars. But next time, please, please, get an English-speaking editor!

Lovely soft fabric, my niece and I are delighted with it. One word of warning - cut edges shed fluff very easily.

Does what it says on the pot. I take one half an hour before a meal, maybe as little as 10 minutes, and I can eat icecream again, and custard.

I tasted this, and sought it out on Amazon as a result. It's good, and that's compared to high quality "real" chocolate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just "pretty good for sugar-free", 10 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
2.5g of sugar per 100g - as a diabetic, that'll do me. And it's gorgeous. Not just "pretty good for sugar-free", but compares well with really high quality "real" chocolate.

This review is from: A Wish For Smish (Kindle Edition)
It's the old tale of the magic lamp, the genie, and the attempt to word the wish so that it does what you want. It's a new twist. It has enough plot for about 500 words.
Padding it with this much description to make a full short story only works if you can write that description with as much style as David Gerrold. The rest of us should not attempt this sort of thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight, but intelligently so, 1 Aug. 2013

No ground-breaking new setting, new philosophy, or new characters, but the slight changes from the clichés are reasonable, and the background is internally self-consistent. The overall "theme" is one of looking at styles of leadership, with some explicit examination of the problem by the characters, and some examination by demonstration.

The technical background is the subject of a number of short "info-dumps" addressed to the reader, but they're short enough and clear enough that this isn't a problem.

There's effectively two parts to the book - the initial disaster and the journey home, and then the next mission, under new command. The second part introduces new characters, a look at the enemy psychology, and an interesting multi-layered puzzle of bluff, double-bluff, triple bluff, and possibly up to duodecuple bluff or more - I lost track, and so did most of the characters.

Some of the characters have depth, others are only there for others to react to, and one pairing is clearly only there as light-weight filler and relief from the heavier issues elsewhere. But in a short book, there's a limit to how many characters you want in centre stage, and I'd say this was about right.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go on, what happens next?, 4 April 2013

I've read quite a bit of the author's on-line fiction, so I knew what to expect - something unexpected, because she's like that :) I got it.

The story starts with exposition - yes, I know, against all the rules that demand action in the first line, but it's interesting exposition, and a good, realistic take on ghosts, vampires, and how to deal with them. A little slow and gentle, but nice. And then we get into the action, and after just enough time to take a deep breath, all hell breaks loose. Not quite literally, but.... so as I emerge from the story, there I am sitting safely away from the consequences trying to get my breath back (because I'd identified with the heroine to that extent), and wondering - what happens next? Given what's just happened, what can I - no, she - (still making that mistake) do about it?

As a short story goes, that was a great introductory chapter to a novel. Please can we have the novel?
