5.0 out of 5 stars Smashing Figures, 16 Sept. 2013
Airfix have always been regarded as a stalwart company when it comes to cheap playthings, and they have survived doggedly into the 21st century and the next generation.

One change, however, is that they are now made of high-quality K-Resin rather than bendy polythene. This makes them less durable as toys but much more valuable to modellers, painters and wargamers, who can now paint these figures only once and expect the paint not to flake. Paint also strengthens the figures.

The German Wehrmacht was one of the most modern in WW2 on all fronts, and the North African desert was no exception. Pitted against professional British colonial troops and new conscripts from all over Britain and the Empire, the Axis were confident of victory in Britain and France's posessions in the region. However, when antiquated British troops crushed the Italians, Germany stepped in with the Afrika Korps. Wearing more practical kit than their European counterparts and very well equipped, Rommel's troops put up stiff resistance before surrendering in 1943.

Most of these figures use the Mauser Karabiner 98k rifle, interpositioned with MP-41 submachine guns, MG-34 machine guns and Stielhandgrenate-24s. The officer, very nattily dressed in a cravat, uses binoculars.

Poses include standing firing rifles, crouching firing rifles, throwing grenades, lying down to fire machine guns, firing submachine guns from the hip, advancing with a rifle and the officer waving his men forward.

Sculpting is brilliant; lines are super sharp, moulding is perfect, and with no flash whatsoever. No complaints in that regard at all.

Another useful point is these figures can be painted in European camouflage and uses as late-war German infantry or Volkssturm.

This is NOT a Toshiba charger. It is sub-standard quality made in China, with a vague copy of the same insert which is very loose and will break very quickly. DO NOT BUY THIS, if you want your laptop to be charged.

5.0 out of 5 stars Airfix British Infantry 1:32, 19 Jun. 2013
Airfix kits like these are classics, and most of the moulds have changed little since they littered previous generation's bedroom floor or dining table.

However, Airfix have changed their previous polythene plastic- a bendy, durable sort like their smaller figures, much-maligned by modellers- for the brilliant new K-Resin. This is much harder and sturdier than polythene, and more importantly, can be painted! The hardness of K-Resin allows paint to stick to it easily; a thorough scrub in warm, soapy water, an undercoat or spray, and then all you'll need is one quick coat and you're done.

So, the kit. Britain's professional army had the finest reputation in the world at the beginning of World War 2. However, a crushing defeat in continental Europe quickly proved that it was sorely outdated for this new kind of warfare. This kit depicts British infantry at around this stage up until around the D-Day landings, though anybody but the very severe modeller would happily use them post-Normandy. This is shown by the lack of jerkins, berets, Sten guns, and other items only accesible to infantrymen during the late war.

They wear battledress, an innovative and practical uniform later copied by the American and German army, with webbing and the turtle helmet. The officer wears a peaked cap instead. Weapons include the Lee-Enfield rifle, Thompson SMGs, Bren guns, the officer's Webley revolver, mortars and grenades.

Poses are very lifelike and useful for wargaming in particular. There are several standing aiming riflemen, riflemen charging or running, riflemen throwing grenades, several firing Thompsons from the hip, a man firing a mortar, a man firing a Bren gun from the hip, and an officer leaning to fire with a revolver.

Sculpting is brilliant; lines are super sharp, moulding is perfect, and with no flash whatsoever. No complaints in that regard at all.

One, niggling historical point is that the officer has his battledress blouse buttoned at the neck. Most officers would have it open or with a tailored collar, so that they could wear a shirt and tie underneath and on show. I imagine some would have it like depicted, however.

One of my personal favourites. Give them some paint and they look just the thing to stop Mr. Hitler's jackboots. Huzzah!

5.0 out of 5 stars Russian Infantry, 30 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In the series of re-releases and new kits Airfix has been running recently, these are my favourites. I bought them primarily to paint and to use in wargaming, and they serve admirably.

Perhaps the name is a little misleading- these are less regular infantry and more stormtroops; nearly all of them wield PPSh submachine guns, the remainder fielding SVTs, with a smattering of light machine guns- and in the case of the lone officer, a pair of binoculars. None of them use the stalwart Mosin rifle which you may expect, but this hardly detracts from the overall product. They all wear minimalistic kit, breeches, boots and the rugged gymnasterka beloved of the Russian army.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, 15 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These troops are perfect for conflicts after D-Day. They wear late-war kit and use later weaponry.

A huge improvement on the earlier Esci re-issues. Airfix had a surprising gap in their range for some Airfix-designed, good quality British infantry, and it's to Airfix's credit that they designed their own new figures rather than those from another company.

With a few Cromwell tanks and a lick of paint, you've got yourself an army.

5.0 out of 5 stars What are the other reviewers thinking?, 15 April 2013
These German troops wear the early-war jackbooted uniform that was later replaced with a more practical kind, but they are perfect for the Battle of France and other engagements before D-Day. The poses include riflemen, grenade throwers, submachine gunners, an officer and a two-man MG42 team.

Airfix has dispensed with the horribly bendy and unpaintable polythene and now casts the 1:32 scale range in a new hard substance called K-Resin. After a wash in warm water with some washing up liquid, a quick undercoat or spray, and then a lick of paint, they will look brilliant and ready to continue the Third Reich's march across Europe. That is, unless they run into any of the other great kits Airfix have been re-issuing recently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classics, 23 Mar. 2013
Bought two sets, one for my son to play with and the other for me to paint. Obviously, the other reviewers have overlooked painting as a substitute for the 'nasty plastic'. Even if you can't paint, you can wash the models in warm, soapy water to remove the factory finish.

Great figures for play and wargaming, in good poses, with a kneeling Bren gunner and an officer. Much more accurate, lifelike and individual than the supermarket kind. A lick of paint makes them even better to raid radar installations and dispatch Jerry sentries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Affordable, authentic, enjoyable., 23 Mar. 2013
These 1/32 soldiers (54mm) represent the United States Army or Marine Corps during World War Two. Airfix have dispensed with the much-maligned polythene plastic and now cast these figures in the hard K-Resin, which is brilliant and now means these figures can be painted. Washed in warm soapy water, sprayed with a base colour and then painted, these soldiers look much better than the unimaginative green army men. Painting figures encourages you or your children to be creative, to learn more about the history of the figures, and is extremely therapeutic (and for me deeply enjoyable!), not to mention leaving you with a great looking box of soldiers as the end result.

The US Army would fight in many theatres in WW2, most notably the Pacific and Normandy. A limited number of US troops also landed in Algeria during Operation Torch with British troops, so these figures are very flexible.

The figures wear standard uniforms from 1941 onwards. Weaponry includes the M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, M3 Grease Gun, M9 Bazooka, M1919 Browning and the officer's Colt .45.

The poses are very lifelike and animated. Poses include men standing firing, running, crawling, firing Grease Guns, crouching to fire a Bazooka, prone to fire the Browning MG, and the officer urging his men on.

These are great for both play and modelling, though for younger children perhaps more durable army men may be in order as gun barrels etcetera may fall off with excessive damage.

A great set typical of the high quality standard Airfix always sets.
