5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, 11 Feb. 2016

Fabulous, gritty, in parts poetic and full of dark humour and atmosphere. The story is fascinating and refers to actual political events. Having read this book I ordered all of McKinty's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping story, fascinating characters, dark humour, highly recommended, 11 Feb. 2016

This review is from: Hidden River (Paperback)
This story is in some way related to McKinty's most recent book "Rain Dogs" in that the protagonist of "Hidden River", Alexander Lawson, also features in "Rain Dogs", the story of Rain Dogs, howeve, taking place some years earlier than the story of "Hidden River". I liked both books very much because of Adrian McKinty's fabulous skills in depicting characters and evoking scenery and atmosphere. I also like his including historic events in his stories. Adrian McKinty is one of the best crime writers I have come across in many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best script so far, 5 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the best and lengthiest of the three scrips which are available so far. There are a few repetitions as the author draws on his vast store of family stories. I loved the book espcially the historical background information. The wonderful dialogue can only be appreciated in full on the page. There are also quite a lot of scenes which were omitted from the TV version but which often contribute to explaining certain reactions of the characters in the course of events. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get a bit deeper into the amazing cosmos of Downton Abbey.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting glimpse of aristo life in the fifties, 5 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The book is quite well written although it could be a bit more descriptive in terms of ambience and atmosphere. Perhaps this can be attributed to some kind of emotional detachment. As it is, the book to some extent resembles a lengthy curriculum vitae. However, I liked the unflattering and seemingly honest picture the author presents of his youthful self. There is quite some psychological insight and self-reflection. Too bad the earlier parts of the autobiography seem to be out of print.
Regrettably, the technical execution of the book is rather poor. The print is very faint, there are a few pieces of text obviously missing, and fragments of the narrative are scattered on odd pages, in one instance on the back page of a photograph. This is a pity in view of the interesting content.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected, 30 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The book contains a lot of historical background information at the expense of giving topical information about manners in today's society so it was not quite what I expected from it.
