1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor, cords much thinner than standard, 21 Mar. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very poor, cords much thinner than standard, but worst of all hardly stretch--maybe 10% of the length max. This means they have no power to hold anything. Might as well use a piece of string! "... buy cheap buy twice ..." definitely applies here.

1.0 out of 5 stars FAIL!, 4 Aug. 2013
I'm on page 93 and asking myself for 30 pages now why on earth I should be interested in any of the (by now 20+ major) characters and give them any more of my time. There is no story so far, and these characters don't look likely to come up with anything worthwhile. But there will probably be more of them. Ms Rowling will probably describe each of them in excruciating detail and flat prose to show that they are all flat versions of the Dursleys. Will there be a protagonist? Is there the possibility of a story here? I still don't know. Even the location 'Pagford' is completely indeterminate and geographically non-descript; a kind of Privet Drive, so to speak. Tedious in the extreme.
It doesn't help that the book is also quite devoid of humour, which is sad. What happened, Ms Rowling, you used to be good at eliciting a good chortle?
The final reason to put down the book for good is that it is printed on cheap paper and doesn't smell at all nice.
It's not as if there aren't lots and lots of good books out there.

BOO!

5.0 out of 5 stars glad I got it, 29 Sept. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very happy with this product, a pleasure to use. It will get home-use, so I anticipate it to last a long time. Well packed and very quick delivery (I ordered 2, so this may have helped them to arrive undamaged). Give it some air for a few days to let the glue solvents evaporate--just like you would do with furniture from Ikea.

A History of Money: From AD 800
A History of Money: From AD 800
by John F Chown
Edition: Paperback
Price: £40.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Misleading description, 18 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The book is not by Forrest Capie as the Amazon headline suggests, but by John Chown only. Capie wrote about a page as a foreword, including a couple of paragraphs about the book itself.
The book itself is well structured and well written, with many interesting quotes. It is narrative, rather than analytic history. As the foreword states: 'This book will serve as an excellent introduction to the many topics in monetary economics that concern us today;... The book will have great appeal to those approaching the subject for the first time;'
Good stuff, all in all, but I had been looking forward to a book by the great F.Capie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good protection but one major flaw, 2 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very handsome case, pleasant to the touch and eye and excellent protection for the i-touch. Very inexpensive given the excellent workmanship. But the major flaw is in the design: the headphone plug is obstructed by the case to the extent that one can't connect the phones without taking the i-touch out of the case. Also the forward facing camera is slightly obstructed by the case (although this is a minor niggle as only produces a little yellowish edge on the image). So if you don't use your i-touch mainly for listening to music etc (and there are enough non-audio apps to make this a real possibility), then this is all fine and here you have a cheap and well made case.

1.0 out of 5 stars Schlock and over-the-top tosh, 4 Feb. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Trust Me, I'm a Banker (Paperback)
This book is neither funny nor about banking (I've been in the industry 25 years). Just an unimaginative writer's attempt to cash in on the 'hate the bankers' zeitgeist. Not worth anybody's time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A journey indeed, 21 April 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Rings Of Saturn (Paperback)
Opening a book by Sebald is letting the author take you by the hand and take you on a journey. It's best not to have any preconception of what the book or story is about, or where the journey will lead. A kind of trust, or giving-over of oneself, is perhaps the best frame of mind.

There are many themes in this hypnotic text, perhaps the most important being Decay: an important trading port swallowed by the sea, landscapes turned to desert by storms or misguided agriculture, illustrious families and individuals brought to ruin. These individuals: characters alienated from society, many from birth, by politics or class or the effect of a physical or psychological deformity. The alienation then manifests in a basic unfitness to participate in 'normal' human pursuits. "It seems to me sometimes that we never got used to being on this earth and life is just one great, ongoing, incomprehensible blunder." These people "unfitted for general society" pursue strange manias, but against the background of the ephemeron of 'sensible' human endeavour in the long perspective of history they are strangely comforting and inspiring.
"The Rings" lingers in one's mind, and one could do worse than to follow up the many references to great poetry and other arts which are mentioned as lying along the roads and halting points in this landscape of the mind.
So, far from depressing, the book ultimately left me with a sense of calm and wonder and excitement about all this unexplored beauty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great translation., 14 Feb. 2010

Martin Hammond's translation for Penguin is intelligent and sensitive, yet complete. Marcus' writing is sometimes called terse and morose, but there is no sense of this here. Good footnotes. A pleasure to read. Introduction by Diskin Clay also very useful.

1.0 out of 5 stars Flimsy materials, unattractive looks, 14 Feb. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It works of sorts, although it is unstable and cannot really be moved one assembled/filled without the whole thing collapsing. The particle board split in several places during assembly by dowels and screws, some of the veneer came off, and the assembled product looked less than impressive. Even if there had been a flawless exterior, the 'beech' veneer has a very plasticky, yellowish look that match no other furniture wood I have around. Eventually fed up with the flimsyness I have just taken the thing to the skip.
