5.0 out of 5 stars The master of words. Great interpretations., 31 Mar. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Triplicate (Audio CD)
Between Love And Theft and Modern Times was a gap of 5 years with no new studio album recordings. A long wait (worth it of course) as the words didn't flow as easily as they did in his prime. It seems that Dylan is still finding it harder to strike up his own compositions so has turned to those great songs of the past. Tempest was 5 years ago now and whilst we have no new Dylan-penned songs, here we have 30 (count 'em) covers spread across 3 discs. Alongside the sublime Shadows In The Night and the lovely Fallen Angels, Triplicate bookends a trilogy of American song that is there purely for enjoyment; no Dylanology required here. Like Self Potrait in his earlier days and World Gone Wrong and Good As I Been To You in his middle years, these albums serve as a reflection of Dylan, a chance to take stock of where this artists is Right Now. And if we have to come here to get to There (Chronicles 2; new songs) then that is fine by me. A new Dylan album every year is alright by me.

Oh, and The Gospel Years 1979-1981 is coming in November. Just so you know ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars You want it darker, trust me., 31 Oct. 2016
This review is from: You Want It Darker (Audio CD)
Absolute perfection. The title track and "Treaty" up there with his best work. From the start to finish the album captivates as Leonard sings of mortality and lost love. Incredible songs that have great melody and production. If you buy one album this year, you want it darker, trust me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take it at face value: this box set is fantastic!, 31 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great album reissue. Quality of both the remaster and the packaging stunning and for £20, excellent value for money. The extra tracks are great and worth the purchase if you already own older versions of Phil's records and tapes, etc. Phil Collins' input clearly shows as you can see quality control is really in check here! Probably one of the best reissues of the last few years, for value, quality, remastering and bonus tracks. If you are a Phil Collins fan buy now. There is even room for all your existing Collins studio albums and then you can replace them as the rest of the series comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible final offering from Bowie, 12 Jan. 2016
This review is from: Blackstar (Audio CD)
Look at me, I'm in heaven - these are lyrics from Lazarus, one of seven songs from what is now Bowie's final album. On January 8th, the day this album came out and Bowie's 69th birthday this line was just another Bowie lyric to wrap our minds as to what the heck it means. Now we know it was all too literal, and that he would pass too soon and all too suddenly and that the line was a premptive message. A goodbye to fans.

This and his last album The Next Day felt like a new period for Bowie. A new 'character'; one who shys away from the nonsense of the press and chat show over-smiley-ness. Both have a sound from previous periods of his yet something new, unheard by anyone before. Take the song Girl Loves - it sounds like Bowie, the same Bowie that once sang Beauty And The Beast and Five Years yet it is new. A new sound. Dollar Days, the same. Wild Is The Wind for 2016; that mystery is still there. What the hell is David saying? Yet it makes perfect sense. An absolutely gorgeous song.

This album does remind me of Station To Station. It begins with a 10 minute overture with Blackstar, setting the theme, setting the tone of what's to come. It is definitely Bowie back in business. Sounds like he has been listening to Bitches Brew by Miles Davis.

This isn't the same Bowie that performed Let's Dance or Moonage Daydream or Fascination and yet the moment it begins something connects it, a thread that goes from those early Deram days thru to Ziggy, to the Thin White Duke to Glass Spider, Tin Machine, Outside and beyond. Same old Bowie, not same old song.

As producer Tony Visconti described, this is David's parting gift to the fans. And for that I say thank you David. Thanks for the music. The art. The fashion. Thanks for it all. You changed everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars May be my favourite Archive reissue yet!, 2 Oct. 2015
This review is from: Pipes Of Peace (Audio CD)
I never thought we would see a deluxe reissue of Pipes of Peace, yet here I am reviewing my copy of this classic 1983 album. We all have our thoughts and opinions on the original LP (mine have always been quite favourable) but for me, the bonus disc offered here is the real treat. The demo tracks we get (5 in total) are very enjoyable, Macca having fun in the studio, we get an insight into his process. The Say Say Say remix is an absolute gem! In a new remix form, remixed by the great Mark 'Spike' Stent (who has worked for the likes of Norl Gallagher) we have a chance to hear previously unavailable vocals from Michael Jackson, as well as instrumental elements not quite heard before. It was great to hear! Also, finally we have Ode to a Koala Bear on CD, sadly missed of thee 1993 reissue. The packagke is fantastically designed, with original polaroids (as per the original gatefold album design) and lyrics to the 11 album tracks. The lush Twice in a Lifetime and much-awaited Christian Bop are presented here too, the latter never before released (well, offficially anyway).

Any true Macca fan will be very happy to get a copy of Pipes of Peace, either as a download, 2 disc or Deluxe 3 disc version. Me, I opted fot the 2 disc version and couldn't be happier. A much malligned album presented in new light.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable - great for any fan of Robin Williams, 16 Sept. 2014
Funny and enjoyable, and even quite moving, now more so since the very sad passing of the great Robin Williams. It may not be a Dead Poet's Society or a Good Will Hunting but this is very enjoyable Robin Williams film. I really do recommend it to any fan of the late comedy star.

Also - look out for the great James Earl Jones c,c,c,c,c,c,cameo!! (You'll get that one when you see it!!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Sly And The Family Shoot-Out, 20 Aug. 2014
An absolute blast! Any action film fan should see this movie. Funny and exhilarating all at the same time. Wesley Snipes and Antonio Banderas are fantastic in their roles. Mel Gibson plays a rather psychotic villain called Stonebanks, great to see him on the big screen again. Sly and team have done a great job making this 3rd instalment. Be sure to check it out at your local cinema and then get the dvd or blu ray too!!

Stallone. Schwarzenegger. Teaming up together in the same movie? Finally! Results? As the DVD/BluRay cover says: "non-stop thrills". Great movie and very enjoyable to all Stallone/Schwarzenegger fans old and new.

5.0 out of 5 stars It may be NEW but this is classic Macca!, 14 Oct. 2013
This review is from: New (Audio CD)
A joy right from 'go'; the 49th album release from Paul sees him on top form. The help from 4 of the industries' top producers seems to have given Macca a shot of creativity. I've loved Memory Almost Full and Electric Arguments but NEW is by far McCartney's finest release since 1997's masterpiece Flaming Pie. With quality this good, I no wonder it's Amazon's top selling CD of the day (Monday October 14th) - and that's just the deluxe version!
