5.0 out of 5 stars still a great series, 31 Jan. 2016

If you have come this far with The Good Wife then you already know it is a very impressive series. The only possible reason for uncertainty is doubting if it can continue at the level of season 5. Obviously there are several emotionally charged reasons why 5 was a hard season to beat and maybe 6 doesn't quite match it. However, it is a great season none the less, the acting remains superb, the design impeccable and the story-lines compelling. So, if you are wondering if it is worth getting, don't hesitate- you wouldn't want to miss it-

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting., 24 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A really interesting investigation dominated by the ghosts of Wittgenstein, Schopenhauer and Simone Weil. The section on Art at the beginning is particularly good. The enquiry into The Ontological Proof of the existence of God also is also not one to miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars perhaps because the writing is so beautiful and the characters are so well drawn, 24 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very moving and strange short novel full of details about Japanese culture. There is a sense of inevitable tragedy as the plot develops but somehow the book isn't depressing, perhaps because the writing is so beautiful and the characters are so well drawn. A
novel that stays with you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Second Rate, 24 Jan. 2016

This review is from: The Knick [DVD] [2014] (DVD)
I am writing just to add a counterweight to all the glowing reviews. Honestly, I have no idea why anybody would like this series. It depends greatly on the charisma of the central character and for me Clive Owen is just awful in the part. He sounds like an Englishman trying to do an American accent, unlike many actors who have crossed the Atlantic he just doesn't convince. Dominic West and Ruth Wilson in The Affair are outstatnding as are many other UK performers but Mr Owen is just all at sea. Then there are the plot lines which are dull and repetitive. On top of that the production is second rate compared to the best - Boardwalk Empire, The Good Wife, Fargo etc . There are so many better things to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tea but...., 17 Nov. 2015

I love the tea but Taylors were recently exposed by the BBC as a terrible employer with people working in appalling conditions. I very much hope they have addressed this situation. So five stars for the tea but no stars for the company.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligence and Insight, 17 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Breathtaking intelligence and beautifully written. If you are interested in Philosophy and Metaphsics this book is a must read. She began life as a left wing intellectual with a sharp insight into Greek mythology, and somehow she seemed to have read everything in the western canon and beyond when she was in her twenties. However, she was not content with the life of a teacher and intellectual she wanted to live her ideals. As a result she forced herself to live a life of poverty working in a factory in order to know what it felt to be afflicted. The experience almost killed her but led to a series of spiritual experiences which brought her to the door of Christianity. She never actually entered the Church and her analysis of why she couldn't is profound. Her essay on Homer is outstanding and illuminates why power always corrupts, this was the basis for her demolition of Communism as a panacea for the ills of her day. There are so many insights in this book it is hard to do it justice. We still live in a world on the brink of chaos and she is as relevant now as she was 70 years ago, everyone should read some Simone Weil and this is a very good place to start.

1.0 out of 5 stars I often don't bother to write bad reviews but this series needs to be written about, 17 Nov. 2015

This review is from: The Fall [DVD] (DVD)
I often don't bother to write bad reviews but this series needs to be written about. It is rubbish on a scale rarely seen on TV. Portentous and pretentious, the story adds up to nothing but in the process it portrays depravity for no good reason. The acting is so low key , you could easily fall asleep if it wasn't so gruesome.I am not put off by violence, Deadwood is my favourite series of all time, but here there is slow unpleasant violence and no catharsis. It makes you wonder if Plato was right and Art just has a bad influence on the soul. Seriously, there are so many better things to watch. I wish people would be more cautious with five stars. I would give this zero if I could.

Price: £29.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Scientific and Moving, 21 Oct. 2015

This is a specialist's book , for artists, students and people seriously interested in Art. It covers a lot of the same ground as the book on Alchemy and Paint by this author. This volume is smallish but very beautifully produced. It manages to be scientific and moving which is not easy.If you want to learn about Medieval Painting in general and the way paints were made in particular, it is an essential read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Profound and Inspiring, 3 Oct. 2015

A very good selection of the work of a profound thinker, it isn't focussed on psychology alone , it is a series of meditations on life, including dreams, imagination, therapy art. It could change your outlook forever. An essential book.
