5.0 out of 5 stars This is how to make a film, 7 Dec. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This film has become an icon for both film makers and viewers and its action scenes led the way for future film makers to produce battles scenes galore. The costumes were copied in Conan the Barbarian and the sets were realistic although it was so cold that tons of melted glass were used indoors as snow etc. This film goes to show that a meagre budget, dodgy Russian/English subtitles translation and continuity errors galore (changing helmets and disappearing pigtails) in the hands of a master film maker like Eisenstein can produce a classic that will stand the test of time.

The dialogue is sparse and propaganda ridden but stagely prophetic in the late 1930s for the war years that followed. I rate Cherkasov as one of the greatest character actors of all time (along with Frank Thring and Toshiro Mifune).

This is a must see and the score by Prokofiev (no less) is worth an addition to ones CD collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Side Splitting, 11 Aug. 2009
I agree with PA Lambert this is a great film. One of the funniest I ever saw. The Godfather at LEE KEE Boatyard is comic genius (even the title). If you have ever seen the out takes of the scene where someone passes wind in the lift (I believe they had over a dozen takes)you see this is slapstick at the highest level, which is what it is supposed to be. Sellars in real life was apparently a melancholy figure (as was Hancock) but on screen he was madcap and refreshing and "not your ordinary run of the mill transvestite".

3.0 out of 5 stars Truth Hurts, 2 July 2009
Compared to the earlier Errol Flynn version which provides a highly romanticised version of events, this production is true to the historical facts. Snobbery, adultery, gross ineptitude and cruely, this film has it all and shows the British Empire in its true light. Great acting and scenery, very dark and brooding in parts. The scene where the sgts. are trying to teach the yokels how to differentiate between their left and right foot is classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Needs to be heard to be believed, 30 July 2008

Although I do not have the actual recordings listed here I can highly recommend this group as I first heard of them in Germany (where better)from my good Friend Olaf who is an avid fan. It was a truly wonderful experience driving through Saxony listening to the vocal genius of these "local" men. It seemed to mean so much more than it does listening at home in Scotland, just as Scottish music means so much more when motoring in the Highlands.I thought that Crosby Stills Nash and Young were the greatest male vocal harmonists that I had heard but, sorry boys, you take the silver. If you love male voice singing then these men are THE BEST. The Nazis tried to destroy everything that was beautiful in the Sons of Israel but thankfully they failed at least in this instance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ahead of its Time, 29 Nov. 2005
When I bought this album in the early 70's none of my friends liked it compared to the PROG ROCK that was the "diet of the day". When I bought it a second time last month I realise how narrow minded the 70's listener was (including me). This is a gem for collectors. Solid Folk/CW music by a man who would not bend to the commercial call of compromise music. Paul Siebel, whose music would influence Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and the like and has been recorded by the best CW artists around, must rate as a refreshing taste of "SOUL" music in its clearest form. This album was made for pleasure not profit and the artist suffered financially for being so bold. It is a musical statement that must be heard to capture the essence of the mood of it's day. Dylan had it and also the commercial success (without compromise?). Listen to Long Afternoons and rate it as a Love Song in the Folk/ Country style that US singers master in and you may agree with my mate Dennis who told me in the 70's that this album was 30 years ahead of its time. I have added it to my list of lesser known genius that the 70's sidlined for the drivel that sold in the millions.
