5.0 out of 5 stars Best Historical Series Ever!, 10 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Versailles [DVD] [2016] (DVD)
What an absolutely FANTASTIC series! The casting is perfect. Every character has their own idiosyncrasies and these are portrayed superbly by their top acting skills, which make this a drama to completely lose yourself in. This is only based on the true events of this historical period, and has been criticised for its inaccuracies, but it's NOT a documentary, so therefore is so much more exciting in its storyline. The additions and changes, in my opinion, add to the basic history of Louis XlV's reign, whilst giving an interesting and knowledgeable insight into the period and especially Court life. Some of the speech is modernised, and has been noted by some, but for me, this makes such a refreshing change than the usual formulaic old dialogues that normally feature in Historical dramas. George Blagden and Alexander Vlahos as Royal brothers work so well together. They are both beautiful men, superb actors, with their subtle eye and facial movements. A great chemistry between the actors. Their relationship was a tricky one, Phillippe, being the second child, has obvious difficulties with having no choices of his own, and having to submit always to his brother the Kings' commands. There are some who use the word 'Pornographic' to describe the sexual scenes.....Why? We are living in the 21st Century! Sex was used at Court, not just for pleasure, which is a natural part of life anyway, but for forming alliances, moving up the ladder, finding out secrets etc. It is, and was, as normal as eating, and, in my opinion, not gratuitous or shocking, just real. The gay relationship between Phillippe and Chevalier, is a loving one, and I don't know if either actor is gay or bi-sexual, but played SO realistically that it is totally believable and, again, part of life. Fabian, the Kings Protector, does not give much away about himself. This makes him thoroughly fascinating as a character, as he appears to have many facets to his personality, appearing as a completely cold sadist at the beginning, then showing us glimpses of his humanity as the series continues. He is also very attractive, and again, top acting.
The costumes, as most other reviewers have noted, were stunning! Alongside the lavishly scenic inside and outside shots. Even their wigs were SO very realistic, best I've seen. It really is a sumptuous feast on the eyes! Every detail is perfect.

I cannot fault this series in ANY way, which is a rarity. It has intrigue, excitement, many varied complicated relationships, fighting, sensuality and wonderful portrayals of our many human conflicts and emotions. High praise to the writers, actors, scene designers, costumiers and everyone involved in the making of Versailles. I don't think that I can wait for Series 2 ! Such a treat to watch something this brilliant on T.V. As you can see, I THOROUGHLY recommend this DVD.

1.0 out of 5 stars How disappointing!, 2 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What a disappointment! Couldn't see the woman in black or her movements around the house very well at all. Loved Daniel Radcliffe and the effects in Woman In Black 1. Glad that I waited for this one to go right down in price before buying. Poor, not worth watching. Not very creepy at all. The only really scary bit was the rocking chair, even though this was in the first film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning film, scenic and with great characterisation. I can't fault it!, 25 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Absolutely loved this version, the best in my opinion.
I have seen the Colin Firth series many times, and know the impact on the majority of viewers, so can understand the problem in making a comparison with that. But, I really cannot understand the intense negativity in some reviews! The casting is superb in relation to the book, and the subtlties and clever remarks of Jane Austen's characterisations are many, even though this is film length. It obviously cannot contain as many parts from the book as the series does.

Darcy is played superbly by Mathew Macfadyen, and Keira Knightly and Donald Sutherland are wonderfully authentic to the book. Yes, some scenes are altered, but I think for the better. The proposal scene at the end is so lovely, and beautifully shot, again, I believe an improvement on the couple going on a random long walk.

I would definitely recommend this version. It misses out the somewhat boring parts of the book whilst keeping well to the storyline. Love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly fascinating and memorable human story., 16 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What an astoundingly well-written book! I know that it's a cliché, but I really could not put it down. It was a real surprise, as usually I am rather put-off by a book that sports a picture from the film on it's front cover, believing that it was written to get on the band waggon, and be a basic and under-researched volume. I couldn't have been more mistaken, as the depth of detail and information taken not just from the copious letter writing that the Gray family indulged in for many years, but from Suzanne Fagence Cooper's research into the period, was TRULY fascinating. This book not only gives a better insight into Effie's early years and marriages, but a wonderfully detailed and moving insight into the whole of the Gray family. Her superb knowledge takes us deeply into the period, showing the home lives, emotions, psychological problems suffered by various family members, and into the artistic world. Effie's husband, Everett Millais's paintings and personality are brought to life well, and there are some lovely examples of his paintings and sketches inside. I kept my tablet handy throughout to find the paintings that could not be included, as Millais's descriptions of why he painted them and what they represented were so enticing.

This is one of the most interesting, emotional (many parts moved me nearly to tears, which is unusual) and in depth books that I have ever read, and if you enjoy reading of this historical period (1800's), and the social constraints of women of the age, then this book will give you all the tragedy, strength, passion, frustration and personal 'issues' suffered by all involved, to keep you entranced for hours. It also gives a balanced humanity to John Ruskin, who is shown as a troubled soul, and we can begin to understand the reasons for much of his strange and somewhat callous and self-serving behaviour towards Effie Gray.

I am most thankful that during that period, many letters were written, preserved and shared with us. I Would urge you to buy and indulge yourself with this wonderful book. (The film is really good also, but the book is amazingly so). You will probably end up feeling as though you knew them all personally by the time you finish it. It also has a beautifully flowing style, so is a real pleasure to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A subtle and beautiful film., 14 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I did not know this story at all before watching the dvd. Have read others comments of 'slow and boring', yes, it is slow, but it needs to be to capture the elegant, sensitive and emotional subtlety of the story. I did not get bored once, but found myself totally immersed in the storyline and superb acting. A very sad and intense film, dramatic Cornish scenery and lovely music. Great acting, authentic Edwardian costumes and a glimpse into a 1913 artists community. Emily Browning is new to me, but I was very impressed with her portrayal of Florence.

This film is based on a true story, and I would recommend it highly, unless you like action, speed or violence, in which case, this is not the film for you. This is very moving and beautifully shot. Loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you love beautiful scenic descriptions!.........., 23 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was intrigued by the title and blurb of this book. I wasn't too sure of the main characters at the beginning, especially Ruth's comment to her husband on the character Leaf's pescetarianism - "If I am ever that obsessed with what I do or don't eat, please shoot me", also her chloroforming of her lizard troubled me a little at the beginning! Another reviewer notes that Ruth is a 'pain in the bottom'. Yes she is, but you eventually learn of her past and the effect this has had on her and her emotional imbalance. I didn't find her husband Michael at all interesting, but the story itself gets better as you read on. The descriptions of the Scottish Isles were superb, with realistic visions of the harsh weather conditions having to be endured by the misplaced islanders back in time. I personally loved Moira, the Reverand's maid. Her story would've made a stand-alone book, a great in-depth character and a heart-wrenching storyline with great dialogue. You are not sure whether this is going to be a ghost story at the beginning, but the supernatural side weaves itself well into the story, and I began to thoroughly enjoy it and couldn't put it down by the time I got to the middle. I have also learned of the extremely rare condition of 'Sirenomelia', such a sad condition, but it forms the link to this whole story. I also loved the many Folk Tales throughout. I would recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
