Cartoons Chorlton and the Wheelies (1976 -1979 &...)

Once upon a time, the first time, called Happy and the Wheelheads,
Chorlton and the Wheelies remains nonsensical, zany delight;
Accents poured by the teapot, dotty plot by the dotty tealeaf:

Dragon from spotty egg spreads happiness by his presence alone
Chorlton: unaffectedly good-natured, unendingly clueless,
Gormlessly cheerful, gawkily unaware

Completely unconscious of any speciality.
The inhabitants of Wheel Estate are ‘three wheelers’
Two at the front, one smaller at the back,

(A great aid to stop frame animation.)
Only Fenella Fellorick, the kettle witch, and Chorlton have legs
And Fenella tele-transports rather than flies or walks.

Story pedalling is provided by her hatred of happiness:
“Nothing but hideous happiness everywhere,” she screams.
“I can’t stand all this goodness,” she wails.

The tantrum witch and her cronies:
The Toadies, emotionally poisonous fungi
And her Spiker henchmen, all threat, no action;

Claptrap von Spilldebeans, the scheming spell book;
O'Reilly, the one eyed telescope... the long distance spy
And her massively giant son Clifford

Too big for anything but his leg in a T.V. set...
All trying to aid her cause of misery-havoc for all
Out of her cauldron loathing of loveliness and charm.

She definitely lacks charm but not magic!
And Chorlton’s very lack of recognising evil
Counters every plot she conspires.

No cats, no dogs, no pets; everything is wrong!
Wheelies persecuted by a kettle witch
Until Chorlton comes along, hatches and decides to stay.

King Otto and Queen Doris, The Minister, Jenny, Zoomer
Wheelies who delight in Chorlton’s disarming powers
And the easy way he thwarts wickedness and wicked ways,

Her need to cause trouble and spoil all Wheelie fun.
Even her Welsh accent doesn’t help Chorlton’s "sweet little ol' lady".
And she can no longer shrivel the Spare Part Trees.

Once upon a time, the first time, called Happy and the Wheelheads,
But ending up: Chorlton and the Wheelies:
Animation but still, nonsensically, zanily delightful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pirates as they should be!, 9 Aug. 2013

Pugwash – the cartoon.

Horatio Pugwash rules the waves
In a weather beaten sort of way
Somehow, against the ocean’s odds,
He seems to win the day.

Cut-Throat Jake skulks off
His scheming and plotting harpooned
When he’s recovered he’ll try again
To get the Black Pig crew marooned.

Or steal their gold or capture their ship,
Get to the treasure trove first.
Pugwash’s feeble best, with help,
Outmanoeuvring Cut-Throat Jake’s worst.

That’s what you switch on to view
That’s what you see on the screen
Pugwash being helplessly inept
Cut-Throat Jake being meaner than mean.

But there’s more to these pirates than meets the eye
Whether they wear an eye-patch or no
Whether they brag or curse or sneer
Behind your front room of a show.

Well juice me jellyfish, crinkle me crabs!
Dent the deck and mangle the mast
Well whip me a wave, lob me a limpet.
Avast ye pirates avast!

In the mind’s of creators
These rogues - good and bad- begin
An idea light bulb flashes
And invention commences to spin.

A script is grown and sheared
Words become character’s voices
A kind of a kind of completion is born
Then it’s choices, choices, choices.

Now it’s time to start making pictures
Cartooning’s pictorial bluff
About fifty’ll suffice to convince you
That their movement is natural enough.

Cut out of card and levered
So limbs and mouths can change
Position and stance and diction;
Endless variation to rearrange.

Draw and colour and snip
Sticky paper, brass split pins and glue
Alter and edit and puzzle
To get them to work for you.

Then it’s off to the camera studio
To film little bits, like notes, beat by beat
To stop frame a picture yet animate
And slot in the sound to complete.

Then you edit the best from the total
A rough-cut in plain black and white.
When you’re happy a colour print’s made
And you can at last feel that everything’s right.

Twenty five pictures a second
About fifty pictures an episode
An endless process of readjustment
And you get the show on the road.

That’s what you switch on to view
That’s what you see on the screen
Pugwash being helplessly inept
Cut-Throat Jake being meaner than mean.
