JOYO JF-14 American Sound Effect Pedal
JOYO JF-14 American Sound Effect Pedal

Price: £34.95

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the price - this pedal is phenomenal, 1 Aug. 2016

This pedal is simply unbelievable. It's technically an 'amp simulator' meaning that it's designed to be plugged directly in to any loudspeaker, PA system, or recording interface - and simulate a classic Fender tube amp. While you can use it like that no problem, it also works as an extremely versatile overdrive / distortion pedal.

The LOW, MID and HIGH knobs offer up a very wide range of tweaking to get the desired balance; they’re also very sensitive with even tiny movements give you noticeable sound changes, which should give you some idea of how wide the EQ range is. The second row of dials are where it gets interesting. LEVEL is the overall volume change; ‘no change’ in your signal would be around the 9 o’clock mark, and if you put it up full blast it will easily treble, maybe even quadruple your signal (regardless of how useful that actually is!). DRIVE is very sensitive, allowing you to get a wide range of sounds starting at clean and bluesy, overdrive, distortion, and even up to classic rock / metal - although it's quite a harsh drive, which may not be to everyone's taste. The VOICE pedal is where the magic happens; I’m not 100% what it does (something with the mid/treble?) but cranking this is appears to be the same as pushing the tubes of an old amp to the edge. Out of the 10 pedals and dozens of dials on my board the Voice knob is the one that sounds like you’re throwing more money at your tone the higher it goes.

My ‘clean’ tone is through a lightly driven Ibanez Tube Screamer, and I’ve got this next to it on the board (before Fuzz and Metal pedals) to use as a distortion/overdrive. You could swap the American Sound and Tube Screamer’s around, but this is infinitely more versatile than a TS.

There’s a 9V battery included, but it also takes a standard 9V pedal power supply. The build is very sturdy; aluminum frame, chunky dials and the standard tough/clicky Joyo footswitch. The pedal also comes in a brilliantly generic box that just has the word ‘Pedal’ printed on the side, which is worth ½ the price alone. The only con I can think of is that any EQ changes mean changes in the level, but most people could live with that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic value for £3, 1 Aug. 2016

Wear these for driving as the polarised lenses mean you take the sun's glare/haze/reflections away, but don't darken everything like normal sunglasses. Fantastic value for £3, replacements for genuine Hawkers, and obviously these aren't quite as good, but for the price you can't argue.

Bought a few cheap pairs of fake glasses to see how they'd suit me - would be good props for nights out/fancy dress. Not really ones you'd wear all the time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still not as satisfying as squeezing with your nails, 27 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I take great pleasure in squeezing out blackheads/whiteheads/spots between my nails, and thought this would be a great way to speed through them. It does what it's supposed to do but is a little fiddly to use properly, and the 'loop' side in particular ends up leaving indentations on your skin for a while after.

Would probably work best if someone else was using it, but will stick for my nails for now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good suction but poor battery performance, 20 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Had this for over a year; perhaps it's not being used enough (couple of times a month) but the battery life has severely deteriorated. With a full charge as soon as you turn it on it begins to slowly decrease in suction, and you get a couple of minutes before it's too weak to pick anything up.

When it's at full power it's a great little vacuum, but after a year of light use it's pretty much unusable.

Lost the original charger after 4 months due to its tiny size - this replacement works a treat, and was only a fiver. It also arrived quickly, so my band didn't actually go flat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sticks with a novelty pain job, 20 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
White paint looks cool, but chips off onto cymbals and rims quite easily, so may be an issue if you're using some else's kit. On the plus side, they get a cool 'worn out' look after a couple of uses. Otherwise, they're hard sticks that can take a beating.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheapest bitcrusher pedal by a long way, 25 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Build quality is very good: metal casing, sturdy footswitch, and the bar across the middle is a nice touch to stop accidentally changing the settings. Standard 9V power supply. Seems to be a replica of the Mooer Lo Fi Machine - but don’t have one to compare side by side. I paid £30 for this; the Mooer is around £55.

MIX KNOB - Wet/Dry mix - the more ‘wet’ signal you use, the quieter the pedal goes, down to around 2/3 volume.
BIT KNOB - Bit knob on top right - ‘sampling depth reduction’ - with this up the sustain is fantastic
CRUSH KNOB - ‘sampling rate deduction’ - the final third of this dial really throws out the 8-bit/16-bit effects
MODE SWITCH - low, middle, or high tones.

With the BIT and CRUSH at 100% - for the full effect - this is such a noisy pedal that’s difficult to pick out what you’re playing from the ‘hum’ when the guitar is silent - as they’re is pretty much the same volume. You’d ideally have this in a noise-gated effects loop. It handles chords OK, but works best when you’re tapping and noodling higher up the neck, or hitting harmonics. The effect itself is quite erratic, and seems to change on every single note depending on how hard you play it; even running up and down a scale the pedal sounds like someone’s twisting the knobs between the notes. For a bit of versatility, this *could* work as a very basic compressed/digital fuzz, sustain, or a very limited noise/destruction pedal - but it obviously doesn’t come close to any of those stand-alone effects.

Overall, a very subjective pedal that people will either love or hate. It’s not a ‘gigable’ box, but is fun to fiddle about with. As a ‘one trick pony’, it’s probably more of a three-star pedal but given the simplicity, and build quality, and crazy value (a decent bitcrusher or sample reducer will set you back well over £150) this is a bargain for anyone looking to try out the effect.
