1.0 out of 5 stars The battle maps are terrible. The opposing armies are portrayed in light black ..., 4 Jan. 2015

It is hard to know where to begin with this book. Ok, start with the format. The book has no page numbers and impossible chapter structure. You cannot know what page you left the story on, nor know when you have finished a battle description. There is no index to refer to. Secondly, there is no distinction between the narrative of the battles and the quotes of the participants. Either italics should have been used or punctuation marks to indicate a quote. Thirdly, the bibliography is given at the end of the battle narrative, not at the end of the book as is the more common way in historical books.
The battle maps are terrible. The opposing armies are portrayed in light black and dark grey, confusing to say the least. Roads are mentioned in the narrative but not shown on the maps. Generals are mentioned, but their troops not indicated on the battlefield. The result is confusion.
The narrative itself reads like a review by experts for experts. If you do not know anything about the period or the commanders, more fool you. The author makes a common mistake with battle reviews in swinging from large to small scale, one moment talking about corps, then divisions, then brigades and finally regiments. He (she? The author of the book is not named. I think, Is Charles River Editors a name or the company who published the book?) talks of a corps attacking, then blithely goes on about a general, who may or may not be the corps general, or a brigade general, or a general many miles away in another part of the landscape.
Illustrations are mostly of the generals and are tossed in half heartedly as their names are mentioned. No ranks are given, nor which side they fought for. Again, you need to know your uniforms to decide this.
The whole book has the feel of a self edited and self published venture.
I bought this book as a Christmas gift for a Civil War buff and was gently tossed it back on Boxing Day.

5.0 out of 5 stars well done Amazon., 3 Jan. 2014
This review is from: Elementary - Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
The DVD arrived just in time to be packaged up and placed under our tree. Well done Amazon for delivering before Christmas.
Elementary is a modern remake of Sherlock Holmes and placing him in New York City. Watson is a woman and the show plays fast and loose with the idea. At the centre is Johnny Lee Miller, a driven and manic Holmes who seems almost to implode with nervous energy every second. It is hard to take your eyes off him. Lucy Liu is a revelation as Watson, intertwining with Miller to form the most unlikely of friendships. Each episode draws you deeper until the final realisation of the Irene Adler and Moriarty threads. The acting is raw and almost too painful to watch.
But there are also laughs and in jokes galore too. Miss Huson appears and vanishes like a comet. Bring her back at once!
A great DVD and worth every penny

Why She Won't Sleep With You Anymore*
Why She Won't Sleep With You Anymore*

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit patronising, 27 Sept. 2013

I read the book hoping to get some help with my relationship. The author offers to give a female insight into the problem and a female orientated solution. She has a good writing style and a great "take" on the problem. This is that the most men will do anything in the bedroom to reignite the relationship but they need to do more outside the bedroom.
A lot of the advice is a bit self evident, but that maybe the point. We men are overthinking the problem.
The difficulty I have with the book is that is sees the male as the person who has to do all the work. It may be the woman's fault, but we men have to do the spade work of getting the woman back into "the mood". The poor woman may be screwing up the relationship but there is nothing in this book about her and what she needs to work on to help with the problem.

Pilgrim's Guide To The Camino De Santiago 9Th Edition: St. Jean Pied - Roncesvalles - Santiago (Camino Guides 9th Edition) (Aamino Guides)
by John Brierley
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars An old friend along the way, 27 Sept. 2013

We walked the Camino for the first time this year and chose this book as a guide. It soon felt like an old friend, full of good points and forgivable failings. The maps give you a great plan and shape to the day but sometimes their mileage and the Camino waystones seem to be somewhat at odds. The advice about the places to eat were most welcome and I could work out where lunch breaks could/should occur.
It is lightweight and very user friendly.
Alas, we were wimps and used pensions and small hotel so cannot say if the advice on the hostels is good or bad.
The only negative observation I could make is that the book does not prepare you for the last great slog into Santiago itself. The kilometre markers vanish and the shock of walking in a modern city can make you lose your heart and a "heads up" from the author might have helped.

3.0 out of 5 stars Irritating, 24 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Reading this book was like having a piece of toffee stuck in my tooth, I had to get to the end, just out of devilment. The original idea is good and the first few pages are weird. Yes, the chances of meeting such a group of friendly people is totally random. Harold is a lucky man, I doubt anyone could walk more than a few days on what he was wearing and carrying.
The story hits a few buffers, the reaslisation by the author that the walk is taking too long means huge swathes of England are passed through without even a nodding acquaintance. The "secret" at the heart of the tale is so obvious you are expecting a double twist but no, the slow drip feed of clues continues.
In the end, the trip ends but to be honest it is too late to save the story.
Good bits? Great ideas. Simple descriptions of married life that are most tender. The reorganisation of the clothes in the wardrobe (Read it, we all know where the idea came from and cleverly stolen away for the gay community.)
Bad bits? The damamge Harold suffers to his body would have stopped him dead. By the end he would have been taking into police custody for his own protection

By this stage the Gor books are too formulaic. The hero will meet a new race of Goreans. He will know more than them and outdo them in all their skills after a few weeks. He will make a friend who will turn out to be the leader in secret. There will be page after page of master slave drivel. And the book will end

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard work, 11 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought the video and have started out on the 30 day ripped. I love the format, a week of exercises, then the next week is at a higher level of intensity and so on. Jillian Michaels seems to be more playful in this dvd than most of her outings. She jokes, she explains and she even suggests breaks. ie a week is five or six days of exercise and a day off!
Having said that I found that week 3 is a killer and I had to stop there. It is very hard work. I am trying again though.
As a two DVD pack it is a great value for money item
The second DVd is more specific, toning up your butt. As an elderly guy I am way past my killer butt days!

I am trying to read these novels to see what on earth is the secret of their sucesses.
The first few novels were actually quite good but as they go on, they get worse and worse. The author loves to go into great detail of the lands and peoples that are the setting of the novels. However, it tends to come over that the hero, Tarl, knows these things too. This book is set in the wilds of Gor, based on the old wild west. no white man has ever set foot in the land of the red man. (Sorry, but that is the term used in the book) And yet Tarl pontificates about them with encyclopedic knowledge.
The "essays" about maste slave relationships have been repeated ad nausium in all the other books, so why bother? Here Tarl instructs another slave girl in the philosophy of slavery, right after one of the more experienced slaves has told her most of the same.
Sometimes the slave girl are less than animals and treated so. Others they are raide to the limits of female desirabilty. They are sold for a few copper coins, yet are worth shipping in space ships from Earth to Gor and a whole industry is devoted to selling them.
I'm starting to skip pages of the writing just to stop myself falling asleep as he bangs on about slavery

I lost interest halfway through the book so maybe the secrets got better and better? It seemed a lot of the usual, listen to her, treat her right and so on. It was a list of emotional and relationship secrets rather that biological.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a box!, 20 July 2011

It is a box! Not a lot to say other than that. But it was sturdy, felt well made and looks very smart. It seems to hold a large number of photos and I am happily salting them away. But, as others have commented, 8 spacers are just not enough. I would have thought you could buy extra spacers but alas no.
