4.0 out of 5 stars Great Ormandy-Rachmanninov combo, 13 July 2013

always love Ormandy's way with Russian music. On this disc appears my favorite recording of the Symphonic Dances of Rachmaninov. I love Ormandy both for his rich sound and for his enjoyment of the little harmonic, orchestral, and rhythmic nuances. Szell's performances here of Smetana are also wonderful. I suppose the Ormandy-Offenbach included here is good too; only Offenbach is a composer who sounds "corny" to me, so I can't really give five stars to this CD as a whole. Let it suffice to say that the Rachmaninov alone makes this a great disc.

This review is from: The Best of Gershwin (Audio CD)
I find that the performers featured on this CD, especially Richard Hayman, bring out the rhythmic and harmonic peculiarities of Gershwin's music, more than most other performers do. The Cuban Overture, as played here, is so much fun. In other performances of the Cuban Overture, I sometimes find the trumpets to blare too much; here they don't. The speed is slower than usual, and the jazzy and Latin feel of this work comes across very vividly.
