Man's Best Friend
Man's Best Friend
by Gray Jolliffe
Edition: Paperback

2.0 out of 5 stars Without Merit, 24 Aug. 2016
This review is from: Man's Best Friend (Paperback)
There was a spate of books like these - toilet books which were designed to keep Company Directors and their wives together.

Sort of had a bit of flare, but about as much merit as a bucket of dog poo.

4.0 out of 5 stars RIP Dad, 23 Aug. 2016
This review is from: The Mission (Audio CD)
Music was always a hot topic in our household - Dad on the Classical me on the rock and roll. Anyway, I hoped this music would mend a rift. It didn't, but I have very happy memories. RIP Dad.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good At The Time, 22 Aug. 2016
This review is from: In Bed With Madonna [DVD] (DVD)
There was a time - oh, not so long ago - when Madonna spoke to people. This film, when it came out, was a private secret between her and her audience. It was fun, and illustrated peoples' lives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Company, 20 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Malibu (Audio CD)
It's good. I heard the stand-out track on Annie Mac and bought the CD. It's different to the lead single but is still pretty groovy and good company.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, Only, 14 Aug. 2016
This review is from: Bullets Over Broadway [DVD] (DVD)
One of Woody's mid-career films - and he as on a bit of a roll in the nineties. There was a time when Chazz Palimonteri was the flavour of the month and he is/was a good actor.

The film itself is a less daring affair than Mr. Palimonteri: Woody's sepia tones are a bit cloying and the familiar rigmarole of putting on a play is a just a bit cloying.

There is the odd funny line but it's not laugh a minute.

1.0 out of 5 stars I Hated It, 14 Aug. 2016
This review is from: Boss Drum (Audio CD)
I hated it. A very devisive record which separated peers from each other. There were a few of them around at the time; Primal Scream's Screamadelica was another.

This review is from: Mad dog and Glory [DVD] (DVD)
Fun movie...quite formulaic, but well-made and acted with the reliable John MacNaughten in the chair. It's a pretty tale of a gangster's moll and the gangster's henchman. There's sunlight in the film and deserves more.

Good Morning, Vietnam [DVD] [1988]
Good Morning, Vietnam [DVD] [1988]
Dvd ~ Robin Williams

2.0 out of 5 stars This is for the artillery - make it loud!, 11 Aug. 2016
I didn't like it particularly - I found Williams cloying and a little bit sweet. There were some good lines and the acting and photography were great, but it just wasn't the film I was hoping.

Nostromo
Nostromo
by Joseph Conrad
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.57

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant., 10 Aug. 2016
This review is from: Nostromo (Paperback)
Nostromo starts gently enough with a banana republic and some shady deals in Government; and flows gently enough, in and out of South American drawing-rooms and, if truth be told; is a little bit turgid - characters burble in and out very quickly and not enough happens. There are a lot of dress uniforms and scene-setting. However, half-way through, Conrad's work pays off and the adventure starts with some amazing characterisation and action. The set pieces are little miracles of calm and suspense and, once again, there is a modernity that would put Chandler to shame. It's also a little bit like War and Peace: the civility of the scheme and the madness of the provinces. The prose is exquistite: the sheer unadulterated loathing with which Conrad greets his politician's is at once accurate and fair; leaving the undertaste of pillage.

Strait is the Gate (Penguin Modern Classics)
Strait is the Gate (Penguin Modern Classics)
by André Gide
Edition: Paperback
Price: £11.39

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't Appeal, 9 Aug. 2016
I was sent it by a really clever friend of mine but I've got to say it didn't really appeal...wishy-washy prose and motes floating in the air don't really do it for me. A bit like Albert Camus without the oomph.
