4.0 out of 5 stars Good Show., 19 Mar. 2016
The Sopranos was de rigeur in the early part of the 21st Century. I was pressganged into watching it by a very attractive girl (who went off on a mission to Latin America). Anyway, The Sopranos was a shot at making late-night TV with a dash of celluloid, and it worked; the casting was first-rate and each episode was made part of a bigger whole, to give the series a cohesive feel - I even got Soprano's Christmas presents.

Anyhow, it never quite got bigger than its medium but gave it a good go.

Possession: A Romance
Possession: A Romance
by A. S. Byatt
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Florid, 19 Mar. 2016
This review is from: Possession: A Romance (Paperback)
There was a huge fuss about Possession and it was much-read when it came out a-top a lot of other historical romances). Try as I might, I couldn't get a sniff of its success with readers, and was rather flummoxed as to why it was regarded so highly. The whole thing looked a little overwritten to me; double-spaced and all that. Not for me.

This review is from: May I Kill U? (DVD) (DVD)
I caught the title after meeting Frances Barber - whom I admire - on Twitter. Anyway she put me onto the film and it is okay.

It's sort of a droit de seigner film about a copper gone mad. It falls down a little bit here and there, but is worth supporting as it is by British film makers with a lot of talent.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Aimed At Me, 17 Mar. 2016
This review is from: Withnail And I [1986] [DVD] (DVD)
I've got to say I didn't get it...watching Withnail and I was one of those moments when I realised that not everything in the world was not aimed at me. The humour, plot and characters passed me by. Good luck to the millions of fans out there, I'm not one.

A History of Modern Britain
A History of Modern Britain
by Andrew Marr
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Depressing., 17 Mar. 2016
I got bought this book for a Christmas present (sorry). It's written in typical Andrew Marr journalese with the sort of encomium that drags graduates into newsrooms in their thousands.

There is a fairly puke-inducing prologue, written in the first-person, which says some fairly snide stuff about some of our modern leaders and - frankly- some of it is highly unamusing, and, imho, Sir Menzies Campbell deserved better.

But Marr gets into his stride, changing tense, and moving into more solid ground. He has a tendency to preach ideology, but politics wouldn't be the same without it and Marr knows that without some of the backstory some of the more exciting parts of the book wouldn't ring true.

I liked this film, it made it's point quite elegantly - rich people with empty lives - and spun a good drama around it.

Price: £34.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Well Mannered., 17 Mar. 2016
It was all right - flatter than a pancake and presented with the minium of fuss; Angel At My Table was presented as the thing Pseudo-intellectuals a like me should see after graduating from University, and it is a good film make with integrity and good manners.

Why anyone thinks Vinnie Jones can hold a movie is anyone's guess. I heard Peter Sutcliffe is coming out soon, perhaps Mr. Ritchie can give him a starring role in something.

1.0 out of 5 stars God Knows Why, 17 Mar. 2016
God knows why this was a hit, or even made...the title has references to the porno industry of the 70's and frankly, I thought it should have been left there but the Producers smelt money - do they ever smell anything else?...and off it went.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Might Not Believe It, But..., 17 Mar. 2016
This review is from: The Wayfaring Stranger (Audio CD)
There was a time in the mid 70's (and you might not believe this) when we weren't going to get predated by paedophiles, blown up by terrorists etcetera etcetera. Burl Ives personified this feeling and sang lots of good wholesome family favourites.
