This review is from: Broken Sleep (Paperback)
Sally Read puts other contemporary female poets in the shade. She is laureate in waiting. Her poems are rich and unsettling in their profound beauty and understated formal knowing. She is utterly aware of everything to the 'Meta-level' of what it is to be aware. But gentle and understated in a way that we can learn from her. To read her poems is like learning from a beautiful landscape or profound emotion. Like with artists' and children, it is almost impossible to paint a baby well; it is the same with poetry, especially when the child is your own. Read has cracked this nut. With simple gestures she shows us what it is to inhabit motherhood and femininity. Anyone who has a baby or wants one must buy this book to believe something remarkable even more so. In the "The Lullaby Hours" she writes: 'And the way you look at me,/as the drink gathers... It sees, soberly past all/my fragile edges. Like a lover's eyes./Or rather, a lover's like yours.'
