1.0 out of 5 stars JVE remix removes the soul form these songs, 13 Jun. 2017
Robert Lamm solo retrospective, yes and no Chicago. Robert Lamm made his name as one of the main songwriters and vocalists of Chicago. If you stopped buying his music around the late 70s and dipped into this it would hard to recognise the sound although he retains his great voice. If you like remixes then you'll love this, Does Anybody Know doesn't benefit from the JVE remix it does nothing here. The stand out songs is Out of The Blue about the tragic loss and life of Terry Kath. It's a record Bryan Ferry would release and you can listen to after dinner. I'll dig out the first few records to hear Robert's voice without any tweaking in the production. A Hit By Varese I think not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Justin Currie writing without his brakes on, 12 May 2017
This review is from: This Is My Kingdom Now (Audio CD)
Justin Currie is quite simply one of Scotland's lost treasures. His back catalogue with Del Amitri is well known but amazingly his solo records have gone under the radar. Now into his fourth solo record his songwriting mojo is as strong ever. The combination of his voice & lyrics on this record clearly highlight that now on the fringe of the mainstream has infused his songs with an added poignancy. Whilst lesser talents sell stacks of inferior records it's time we all woke to the genius of Justin Currie. Catch him live on tour when you can.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lacklustre packaging does this great record no favours, 6 May 2017

As others have noted the single card slip case and no lyrics initially gives the impression of lightweight record. It's not, it' up with his finest work. The record sounds like JM around the Lonesome Jubilee & Scarecrow era. Over the years JM has explored various roots with his music - some of them worked others failed. Here the sound is familiar enhanced by Carlene Carter. If you need convincing listen to Damascus Road & My Soul's Got Wings one of JM's finest moments and there's been many.

5.0 out of 5 stars Author remains unknown, 2 April 2017

Author Unknown Jason Falkner releases another innovative pop gem - the Moore the merrier. Following his departure from Jellyfish Jason Falkner released two superb solo records, lost his label, became a cult figure in Japan, played with Macca and has been on the fringe of pop fro the last few years. This record shows JF at the top of his game great guitar riffs and catchy pop songs tucked away on this gem. Give this a few listens, then buy the two Jellyfish records and JF's solo records - for fans of pop music as we used love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Ain't Over Yet for Rodney Crowell, 31 Mar. 2017
This review is from: Close Ties (Audio CD)
At 66 Rodney Crowell's songwriting continues a rich vein of form which started with The Houston Kid. That record defined the second part of his career moving away from the more traditional country arena to more personal songs and dare I say it alt country Americana? Tracks like It Ain't Over Yet with Roseanne Cash & John Paul White (ex Civil Wars) show Rodney's deft touch with a song that stops you in your tracks. Rodney doesn't move far from from his recent template but make no mistake Rodney Crowell isn't treading water here - one of the records of the year has just arrived.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't let these songs pass you by, 24 Mar. 2017
This review is from: Chris To The Mill (Audio CD)
Chris Difford solo work surpasses much of his Squeeze back catalogue, and now this is a great opportunity to rediscover the genius of Difford. Lyrically at the top of his game writing about his childhood, family and his own demons this set is essential. Difford has disappeared off the radar but these songs and demos demonstrate that he is up there with some of the best songwriters we've produced.

5.0 out of 5 stars AKA WEZHAWKS working title, 26 Feb. 2017

Seamless joining together of songwriting troubadour with The Jayhawks. Don't let the initial pop sound put you off, there are some very good songs here lyrics melodies augmented by The Jayhawks sound which includes some fine guitar work from Gary Louris. I'm not familiar with JWH but this record should have all of us scurrying off to seek out his back catalogue. Produced by Gary Louris this modestly titled record is a must for lovers of melodic clever pop.
