4.0 out of 5 stars ' Paved the way ', 15 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Pieces Of A Man (Audio CD)
I believe that Gill Scott-Heron was titled the "Godfather of rap" a vocal style that was something that probably evolved from his poetry he certainly had something to say about civil rights, blending his poetry with jazz based soul he angrily confronts many social problems of the day,in a period when most popular black music was Motown dance music without a hint of any politics . Was this the instigation for Stevie Wonder's 'Innervisions' and Marvin Gayes 'What's going on'?

4.0 out of 5 stars 'A good introduction', 15 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Spiritual /Imp (Audio CD)
A very good selection of songs reflecting on John's religious side which was motivation for much of John's music, Favorite tracks 'dear lord' & spiritual ,a musician of great integrity , he was often found asleep with his saxophone on his chest, very intense .

Abigail's Party (BBC) [1977] [DVD]
Dvd ~ Alison Steadman
Price: £5.00

4.0 out of 5 stars 'like watching a car crash', 15 Sept. 2011
I sometimes have trouble watching this, the awful 'Beverly' the 'host with the most' played brilliantly by Alison Steadman. It's a social gathering from hell, very funny very 1970's.

Jazz Suite Inspired by Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood
Jazz Suite Inspired by Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood

4.0 out of 5 stars 'The godfather of british jazz', 15 Sept. 2011

Great album probably one of the best British jazz composers of his time, definitely on a par with what was being produced in the states at the time, if you just buy the album for 'starless & bible black' you won't of wasted any money.

5.0 out of 5 stars A milestone in modern Jazz, 11 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Kind Of Blue (Audio CD)
The cliché attached to this album 'the jazz album for people who don't like jazz' this statement is probably true but it still doesn't detract from the fact that this is one of the greatest jazz albums of all time, fifty years old and it still sounds fresh, the more it's listened to the more you find in it. Great line up of musicians expertly orchestrated by the great man himself recorded in two sessions with no rehearsal in a converted church in New York or so the legend goes.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'sheer asininity', 11 Sept. 2011
Not just series 1 but the whole collection is excellent, extremely funny, extremely well written . The every day events of a writer who is very cynical ,his publishing agent played by John Fortune who really likes to exploit Ed whenever possible ,the incredibly shallow 'Ping' the publishing secretary & Ed's so called friend hollywood film producer Jazz Milvain .Poor old Ed is always skint & just won't 'dumb down'he really is anachronistic & cantankerous but i think you'll find yourself agreeing with him .

4.0 out of 5 stars the definitive book of london, 10 Sept. 2011
This review is from: London: The Biography (Paperback)
I don't think there is another book on london that covers so much ground and so much history . Easy to read and engaging, the book covers all sorts of curious facts along with well documented history sometimes bordering on the romantic and mysterious which makes the book more than just a factual account ,well worth a read.

Cooltide
Cooltide

4.0 out of 5 stars My favorite john martyn album, 10 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Cooltide (Audio CD)
I purchased this album when it came out in 91 and I never tired of it. Vocally Johns voice is at its best deep and gruff almost an instrument in itself, the songs are well written and soulful and in a variety of styles. Difficult to compare with any other artist, just good music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take a journey, 9 Sept. 2011
The more you listen to this album the more you realise it's brilliance, the classic title track then leads you through the narrative, the dark world of the mobster bent on revenge for his murdered brother. some of the tracks have a distinct 'hippy San Francisco' feel about them some almost psychedelic, later on into the sound track some of the songs are repeated but altered and sound more dark and of course the great 'pub singer' track 'how about you' all strung together with dialogue from the film.

The ever changing line up keeps Incognito's music sounding fresh and new even though it's familiar territory, Perfect production, crisp beats and great vocals are trademarks for Incognito, stand out tracks are 'we got music','jacaranda' and 'I'll get by'.
