5.0 out of 5 stars The enticing Madrid experience, 28 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not at all what I was expecting, but found the book a wonderful insight to Madrid and it's atmosphere, culture and culinary extremes. I couldn't put the book down. It followed a young Englishman's experience of life in the Capitol of Spain, struggling with the language and extreme customs, whilst trying to help publish monthly magazines and his unexpected adoration of Madrid's way of life.
Not to give too much away, I can only wholly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in the Spanish culture, especially from the English prospective.

I have read all the Diaries of this Southern English retiree. Somewhat captivating, but rather opinionated (Yes I am a Northerner!) I must congratulate his objective of learning Spanish and learning to master his garden plot. I was surprised with the ending.

I found this book really interesting and the story of the writers' experience, living in Madrid and learning Spanish, very captivating. It was also most informative on another level, drawing on quotes from Laurie Lee and entwining the depths of Don Quitoxe's travels, whilst experiencing the route taken in one of Spain's most famous novels. A worthy read and an introduction to life in Madrid

I found this book a bit slow to start, but once I understood the whole background to the plot - I almost 'lived' the depths of flamingo and the characters involved. A worthy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than James Bond, 21 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As usual, this book has unexpected twists and turns, pulling in characters from past books of the series. The story line is fast moving and keeps the reader totally immersed in the quest.

Another excellent read, where the ex S A S Major, is confronted with almost unbelievable evil and has to act and draw on his S A S training, to save the human race. A conspiracy theory at it's best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Further tales of the anarchist detective, 21 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As expected this latest offering is excellent and keeps you 'hooked' to follow the fast moving story. The characters follow through from the previous books. The book is based around the Valencia region of Spain and includes interesting facts of how Spain in evolving in the modern day, whilst keeping a footing in the deep history of the region.

May I suggest to the author that it may be interested to consider writing Hilario's (the detective's grandfather's) story. The grandfather features greatly, in all of the detectives books and his outlook on life has deeply influenced Max Camara, in his unconventional policing.

I would strongly recommend this book.

Andalucia in the times of the Moors, with a tale of a Nordic slave girl who became a concubine of importance. The story weaves an amazing tale of the Harem and the Moorish way of life. Well worth reading.
