Steafán Hanvey and The Honeymoon Junkies
Steafán Hanvey and The Honeymoon Junkies
Price: £7.99

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent cd., 10 Dec. 2010
I discovered this group recently. sadly groups who refuse to conform to the popular crap are ignored by most outlets. the bbc have killed programmes years ago that would have supported singer song writers like Hanvey or another Irish singer Mark Fannin -- that man fanjo.to many people retreat to the 60s -- and God help us -- the 80s. The latter have no hope but there are many folks who like to be challenged so buy this album

This review is from: Mahler: Symphony No. 9 (Audio CD)
I did not order the Mahler 9 but got it by error. despite Amazon not admitting their error I am grateful they did make it because this is Simon Rattle and the Berliner at their very best.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful Itroduction, 11 Dec. 2009
My son is a medieval historian and, after travelling in southern Grance, I asked him about the Cathar heresy. He recommended this book as a useful starting point for the general reader. It is a aasimple, but not simplistic, introduction to the nature of dualism and the ruthless crushing of the Cathars. Even today, as the author demonstrates, the Cathar rebellion and the crusades against it have shaped the hostility between nothern and southern France. For those who want to understand the nature of this heresy and its ruthless destruction, this is the book to start with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 29 Oct. 2009
This is the third volume in the Millenium series by an outstanding Swedish author whose death has deprived us of any further amazing crime stories and his superbly drawn character Salander. He not only creates great characters he has a command of jounalism that is essential to all three volumes. He fearlessly exposes corruption in Swedish government and business with the same crareful research he did on Nazi groups in contemporary Sweden. Crime readers will be be enthralled but so too will readers who enjoy good literature. The translations are perfect

4.0 out of 5 stars A Complex South, 28 Mar. 2009
In recent years many scholars have tried to revise the stereotypes about the South and its history. David Garrow was sniffy about this book but that only reveals more about him than the book. It is true her passion sometimes leads her to over-state her case and that is why I give 4 stars but this subject cannot be treated in a dessicated fashion. There was ans is too little wreittien about the voices that have not been heard during the bleakest period in southern history. But Dixie - the name itself rejected by many southerners - is not a desert of bigotry. Black Folks did not succumb under Jim Crow, the South had a fighting tradition that has been ignored until this book and others by Kelly, Honey, Jackson and Fannin. A very good read.
