4.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre VHS kinky trashy oddity, 12 Aug. 2016
The video on this DVD is only VHS quality. But you do get a bonus film "Blood Stained Romance" on the same disc but I think this is a modern era flick. "The Black Room" itself is a very strange little film about a demented brother and sister who rent out a room in their house to strangers who they then drug or kill so that the guy can inject their blood into himself. I think he has some kind of strange, incurable disease. It looks quite stylishly shot, or perhaps polished is a better term. in the same way those mid 90's cable soft-core porn flicks looked shown on Channel 5 back in the day. It has some interesting scenes and the narrative is not boring. Its all a bit kinky, people rollicking around naked etc. At the end it turns into some kind of zombie flick. It has a real WTF ending. Its a strange hybrid of mid 90's cable soft porn and atmospheric horror but the horror stuff is sparse so this may turn some people off. But its an interesting oddity at least, real trash cinema.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great creature feature, 12 Aug. 2016
This is a low budget monster movie with plenty of imaginative moments and decent but obviously low budget effects. It is totally non-PC. There is some hilarious interplay between the characters and funny dialogue. I would recommend this to fans of films like Nightbeast, Basket Case, Doom Asylum, The Evil Dead, also Combat Shock and other Troma movies. Though its not for people who are not into old and bad horror movies.
The Blu-Ray itself looks great, considering its from 16mm. Much better looking than a DVD , good depth, sharpness, colours, and nice filmic texture.

This is a respectable release of this film. It appears to have been brought together from multiple sources, mostly it is a fine DVD presentation, with a small portion looking like its sourced from tape. It runs 86 minutes PAL, IMDB puts this film at 91 mins uncut (probably an NTSC runtime) so this version is not significantly cut as PAL always runs several minutes faster than NTSC. I checked the web and could find only one person on a forum saying its cut in comparison to their old video tape, but by less than a minute. Most if not all of the violence appears to be intact so I doubt its censored in that respect. I did not notice any jarring trims. Im happy to own this release so its either get this or enjoy a long wait for a fully uncut DVD or a Blu ray. But seeing as this one used a tape source maybe a BD is out of the question?

There is really no reason at all to watch this film unless you like Jimmy Cliff's music.

The Manara Library Volume 2
The Manara Library Volume 2

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 10 April 2016
this book is worth it for the b&w "Trial by Jury" shorts alone. Each one is a short story about a historical figure responsible for some atrocity or other, the historical facts of the case are laid out and the reader is asked to decide the verdict, innocent or guilty? A nice educational blending of history and comics which is sadly non existent nowadays. El Gaucho has the more lavish finished artwork but I really enjoyed Trial by Jury and it was a total surprise out of the blue. Reminded me of good old days of comics.

The Michael Moorcock Library Vol.1 - Elric of Melnibone

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent read, cheap scanned reproduction, 13 Mar. 2016
This is a decent read, not a masterwork or anything, though few comics are. Its a collection of Elric of Melnibone # 1-6 published in 1983 by Pacific Comics. It seems like a reasonable enough attempt to translate the novels to comics. The reproduction is via cheap scans which means it isnt great looking but is readable. The artwork is attractive but again not masterful. The thing that bugged me was the chapters were not divided. I would have preferred to see the covers reproduced throughout the book at the start of each chapter rather than together at the end. It was sometimes difficult to see where each individual comic began and ended. But overall worth a tenner.

4.0 out of 5 stars MIND THE DOORS!! Tobe Hooper MUST have seen this!!, 25 Feb. 2016
This review is from: Death Line [DVD] (DVD)
Decent horror for the period. A little bit light on production value IMO seems as if the BBC could have made it, had they made cannibal horror films (lol). Not that overtly gory but atmospheric and has that unique British sense of humour held together by a fun performance by Donald Pleasance as Detective Inspector Calhoun. Our good detective is investigating (in a fashion, between drinking tea and getting pi555ed) a mysterious spate of disappearances from Russell Square tube station. The thing I have to say is it seems to me that Tobe Hooper MUST have seen this film prior to making TCM, it has a lot of stylistic similarities, not forgetting the cannibalism theme, and being a slightly earlier film by a couple of years. Come on Tobe why not admit it. TCM is always mentioned as a seminal 70's horror, but DEATH LINE is NEVER mentioned. I bet Gary Sherman is well peeved so cinema history should be re-wrote for Gary!! Also what on earth is the last cannibal survivor saying throughout the film, sounds like "MIND THE DOORS". It quickly gets grating!!

This unit does the job well. Overall I fit over 500 DVD and Blu Ray discs into it. You get 2 rows which only allow Blu Rays (due to dimensions) and 6 rows which are large enough to accommodate DVDs. the shelves are all re-positionable (multiple holes are provided) but this was the optimum set up for storing my movie collection. The unit itself looks pretty good when together and fixed back to the wall. You definitely need to wall fix this as it will lean forward and be unstable otherwise. The unit took around 2 hours for me to put together, quite a long time really. the instructions were a bit cryptic. They only provide screws for fixing the back panels which was strange. I had to dig some tacks out of my toolbox as I wouldn't fancy using screws for the back panels, too awkward and time consuming. also I think the back panels were slightly oversized and would not allow the top half and bottom half to fit together 'flush' hence a slight leaning effect. but once fixed back to the wall its fine. overall despite these machining discrepancies im happy with the usefulness and look of the product for a reasonable price.
the item took only 2 days to arrive once dispatched by seller. it came via dpd and was trackable all the way to my door. they even sent an email with a 1 hour slot for delivery on the day. flawless in this regard, relaly excellent service.
