Not a book for the faint hearted. Highly emotional story telling at its best. Although a book about a gay man, this tale will resonate with anyone that has ever had self doubt.

Well written and absorbing, the narrative is gripping and emotionally charged throughout.

A fascinating story of human !life

This review is from: A Thing Called Joe (Paperback)
This book has two things that really appealed to me. The first was the style of writing. it was easy to read and the mixture of present day and past life stories worked really well to explain the personality and spirit of Joe Tully. He isn't your everyday literary hero, but is a normal man. The years may have aged him, his family may have deserted him ,but he is an old trooper and never loses his sense of who he is and what he wants.

The second factor is that Joe, and most of the other characters, are all involved in the theatre, which is one of my own loves. The author brings all her experience and love of the theatre into her writing and it really shows through. Her description of the play in the back room of the pub was perfect and is still as true today, where some fantastic work is produced in fringe pub theatre venues, as it was in Joe's day.

I took this book with me on a long coach trip, and the hours flew by as I travelled in Joe's world. By the last chapter, I really hoped the old guy had a wonderful final years before he went off to the great orchestra pit in the sky.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Loved Lucy - It's True and I'm Proud to Say it, 15 April 2016

When you want to read a heart-warming story about the relationship between two people then you need look no further than this brilliant book. I first heard of Lee and Lucy’s relationship when seeing the play based on the book which had two fantastically successful runs in London’s West End recently. I wanted to know more so bought the book and really lost myself in Lee’s experiences with one of the planet’s funniest women.
Lucille Ball was not your average American housewife. She comes across as a total one-off. Sometimes flirty, sometimes cantankerous, always – at least when she was with Lee – herself. We travel with Lee into Lucy’s world, where backgammon rules and the most famous comedienne in the world is contented sitting with her friend playing game after game.

Lee gives the reader a lovely insight in what it is like to be with someone famous. He could have made it all sweetness and light but instead gives an honest account – warts and all – of his time with Lucy. Their highs and lows, their fights and the period when they fell out and didn’t speak for over a year, its all here for the reader to experience. By the end, I felt I had come to know both Lucy and Lee so much better, and like Lee, I had really grown to love and respect this formidable woman who I had known from the small screen as a child.

A lovely book that easy to read, doesn’t do a hatchet job and more importantly demonstrates the reasons why so many people can honestly say “I Loved Lucy”

This review is from: Goodbye to Soho (Kindle Edition)
Once again Clayton has written an absolute gem of a book truly reflecting the life of Soho. Everybody is real and everybody is someone that you will care about. The artist, Raqib Shaw, Soho Madams, Sue and Maggie - with their own take on what is right and proper. Little Chico in his prison cell and the wonderful Sebastian Horsley. These and many more characters fly in and out of Clay and Jorge's lives as te shop starts to fail and they contemplate the unthinkable.

As Westminster planners conspire with building contractors and chain shops to destroy Soho's atmosphere, at least we will always have Clayton's wonderful books to keep it alive and in our hearts forever.
