I'm probably biased but this is an excellent book. I grew up reading Barker, in many ways a visionary who had built on and twisted the worlds of King and Herbert. It was with the release of the movie 'Hellraiser' that brought him to the mainstream in such a way, that his creations have been emulated, parodied and copied but never improved upon. Through Hellraiser I read more and more, loving the character of Harry D'Amour, occult detective as well as other creations such as the monster v monsters scenario in in Cabal.

Further from that I loved other author's takes on his works - especially those by Gaiman, Pinborough, Lebbon, Armstrong et al in Hellbound Hearts.

It was with some trepidation that I began to read this book. Despite dipping back in occasionally, Barker hadn't released a novel for some time. Would he still have IT? Would I enjoy t? Perhaps my perspective would have changed whilst he had not.

I was greatly relieved to find this is a fantastic read. Pinhead - or The Hell Priest - gets some valuable air time and his character is fleshed (pun intended) out and developed in a way that the film series, with their increasing B Movie status, never could. Coming up against D'Amour we can really see the levels of depravation inside him that just would not come across on screen.

Pinhead's last ride - as this is said to be - is a creepily disturbing book - horror at it's best. There is no wishy-washy colouring over of evil here, and D'Amour shows what can be done with an intelligent and grounded (and fallible) occult detective - Jack Nightingale take note.

This is what Horror should be.

Great stuff.

Potential spoilers!

Sarah Pinborough is a fantastic writer, notably of supernatural/ fantasy books.
The story is set in a near(?) future, where an anonymous government body spirits away children who shown signs of an unnamed disease.

When ripped from their family, they are deposited at The Death House, part boarding school, part hospice where they will spend their time until the disease finally wins its war. Inside this house lives Toby, a sufferer longing to return to normalcy and the girlfriend that never was. He and his friends care for each other, wary of the staff as well as other groups of teens. Many people have likened this aspect to 'Lord of the Flies', however it puts me more in mind of Stephen King's 'Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption', as Toby and the new girl - the entrancing and mysterious Clara - seek small victories over the evil Matron. There is much left unsaid in this book. The disease remains anonymous as too the secrets of the upstairs rooms. In truth that is irrelevant.

Despite it's title, this is at it's heart a romance, not only between Toby and Clara, but with the beauty and joy they take from life every day. Incredibly well written, it is in turns uplifting, bright and at times - like life itself - dreary and downbeat. And herein lies Pinborough's skill. For someone who has grounded themselves in horror and murder, her ability to adapt to a literary tale, echoing what would now be considered classics, she has produced a book which involves and engages you from the start to the bittersweet end.

An exceptional book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good little set supposedly for age 6 and up, 7 May 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A good little set supposedly for age 6 and up. In truth however, I would say it is more likely to be suitable for an on track child leaving Y1 (or a younger brighter child, or an older child below age related expectations(Gove's levels, not mine).

It covers the basics presumably expected at y2 SATs levels - can't tell as they haven't been rolled out yet. Pronouns, connectives, basic sentence structure and so on are covered in various workbooks featuring the ubiquitous Biff, Chip and Kipper. It's child friendly and my Y3below age elated expectation learners loved working with it.

To be honest, i can't tell the difference between this and any supermarket generic mouthwash. My wallet might, but that's about it. As you expect, you rinse and gargle and hopefully halt the encroaching halitosis monster.

4.0 out of 5 stars ... Multigroom 1000 is a decent little package and a good entry level model, 26 April 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This Multigroom 1000 is a decent little package and a good entry level model. It comes with various heads as you'd expect, allowing precision trimming to accomodate whatever style of facial hair you wish. It's easy to use, designed to sit comfortably in our hand and the heads simply twist on and off - much easier than other brands.

The effect is good, giving an even trim and it fits easily into a washbag for your weekend away or holiday.

Well worth the money, and whilst there are better unis on the market, for this price it is relative bargain.

Never having heard about this author, I was interested in the blurb and decided to give this a whirl, and very glad I am too.

Catherine Ravenscroft is one of those people you are always jealous off. A job in TV, a wealthy partner, lovely house and a seemingly perfect life. to a point.

Then, she picks up a book in which the characters seem familiar...

As she reads on she is stunned to find the story is about her and her discretions many years ago...

Secrets build on secrets and the past truly comes back to haunt her in a book with a great premise written by an author with a fantastic style.

An excellent and slightly disturbing read, making you question your own past at times!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not now Cat-o, 5 April 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Eschewing the fact the cat will play with it for about half an hour, then eat the box, this is a relatively easy to put togteher indoor house for yoour pet to scratch and gnaw at.

Putting it up is pretty easy if you have ever visited IKEA, which is handy as the instructions are rather sparse. However, using a bit of common sense should see you out this together in about an hour or so.

Once assembled, it has several different levels and features fro your cat to hide in/launch an ambush from. It's well padded and looks comfortable and has several blind spots for your cat to be ensconced in in order to pretend it is Burt Kwouk leaping out to assault Inspector Clouseau. It's not too big though and if you are tired of being ripped to shreds, it is possible to put this putside, although like other reviewers, I would varnish it first.

A good present for those who enjoy training small, furry ninjas.
