3.0 out of 5 stars Good concept, bad ending, 23 Dec. 2003
This review is from: Of Men and Monsters (Paperback)
This book started off slowly, gathered pace through the middle, and then stopped abruptly. The end of the story made so little sense that I found myself checking to see if it was the start of a trilogy. It's not, it just leaves it hanging with the hint of possible sequels which, to my knowledge, never arrived. Shame really, as so much could have been done with the characters and plot.
To summarise, I enjoyed the story, but felt let down by the cliffhanger ending, that to this day, is still hanging.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first book., 30 Oct. 2003
The first book in this series (Araminta Station) I thought was excellent (*****) but thought this was a very weak follow-up. In the first book the main character was firmly established only for the sequel to be mainly about his ladylove. As a consequence, in my mind, the action seemed to be toned down somewhat and the way that the mystery that she was investigating was solved seemed to be a case of "quick, finish it. The deadline is approaching fast".
Admittedly the third book is only slightly better and about half as long. All in all, the series deteriorated rapidly after book one. Disappointing.
