4.0 out of 5 stars A Brit in Hill Country, 20 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Candy Store Kid (Audio CD)
What originally attracted me to this CD was the mention of the backing band, The Mississippi Mudbloods. They being the Dickinson brothers, Alvin Youngblood Hart et al.
Of course Ian Siegal has his own distinctive voice and is a mean guitarist also but the sound of Mississippi Hill Country shines through.
I must also mention the soulful backing vocals that lift certain of the songs to a higher degree.
Kicking off with 'Bayou Country' you'll find yourself in the middle of the swamps where 'Kingfish' finds the same dirty groove.
'I am the train' is also one of the more outstanding songs on Candy Store Kid.
The musicianship, needless to say, is masterfull throughout the whole album.
The only song I don't like very much is 'The Fear'.
All this good news means of course that I need to get me his previous album 'The Skinny' asap.
You? You should get this new and nice groovin' blues album now.

5.0 out of 5 stars The go-for Hammill album if you need only one, 17 Oct. 2012
This album has it all. The depths of fiery oceans, the windswept desert, the icy mountaintops.
And that's just the music.
He's written his best song ever here. It's called Wilhelmina.
The sound is slightly different from the relentless energy that his band Van Der Graaf Generator usually erm...generates.
The album works wonderful as a whole and to me it's the best solo effort he's done before or since.
Highly recommended for the proggers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential Cave, 11 Oct. 2012
This review is from: B-Sides And Rarities (Audio CD)
Especially for those who missed this 3 CD box the first time around. Here's your chance to get another pile of Cave essentials without having to look high and low.
B-sides, live stuff, band (or solo) versions of classics and covers. It's all here in one place.
There's even a fourth disc floating around on the grey market but for now (and until you find that one) here's more than enough to keep you drooling for a while.
As I said : Essential material.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure chest, 17 Sept. 2012

This review is from: Country Funk 1969-75 (Audio CD)
I'm pretty partial to the genre called Country Funk but apparently not hardcore enough.
Familiar with most artists on this compilation, I bought it especially for the names I was unfamiliar with.
The biggest surprise (and dare I say the best song too) was finding former teen idol Bobby Darin (Bob Darin now) on here singing Light Blue. Killer song.
Tony Joe White, Jim Ford, Bobby Charles, Link Wray, Bobbie Gentry, Larry Jon Wilson. The best in the genre. Only Joe South and Billy Joe Royal seem to be missing.
But what about Gritz, Cherokee, Gray Fox or Dennis the Fox?
And still their songs on here belong on this comp seamlessly.
Light in the Attic records who compiled and released this treasure of Country Funk sure are in the running for one nomination or other.
Excellent job, you guys!

4.0 out of 5 stars David Eugene rocks out, 13 Sept. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Laughing Stalk (Audio CD)
The band has been expanded for The Laughing Stalk. There is now a keyboard player and an extra guitarist in the mix which makes for a fuller and mainly electric sound.
So,musically, a slight change in direction although I still wouldn't call it Stoner Rock.
Lyrically the same themes reappear. The same holy and unholy demons haunt the mind of Edwards.
As always the songs are excellent no doubt about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure finally on CD, 30 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Un "Sung Stories" (Audio CD)
A big congratulations to Wounded Bird Records for finally giving this absolute gem a CD release 26 years after the original vinyl.
Phil Alvin, brother of Dave and lead singer in the Blasters, produced a really mixed bag of styles with 'Un-sung stories' but they work together extremely well.
Half of the songs are recorded either with the Sun Ra Arkestra or with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
The other half are country blues with just Phil on guitar.
He truly shines in the latter category: Next week sometime, Titanic blues and Gangster's blues.
And don't worry when you see the name of Sun Ra. It's not out there jazz as might be feared. Those songs (Ballad of Smokey Joe, Old man of the mountain, Brother can you spare a dime) all have a natural New Orleans feel.
The reputation of this hard to find album has grown out of proportion during the years but deservedly so.
Those who still have the old vinyl can now replace it with the cd version.
All the others should get this true five star diamond asap.

4.0 out of 5 stars Closer than keep you, 29 Jun. 2012
This review is from: Following Sea (Audio CD)
Following hot on the heels of 'Keep you close'. This album was released without warning or PR.
Those who think the songs on 'Following sea' are just outtakes or leftovers from 'Keep you close' may think again.
'Following sea' is a worthy and fully realized album.
There's a lot of parlando in the songs and I would've liked to hear Mauro's guitar work more to the fore but those are minor quibbles. It's the bass that holds the whole album together.
There's only one song to remind us of the very early dEUS. 'Fire up the google beast algorithm'. The title says it all really.
'Quatre mains', 'Hidden wounds'and 'The give up gene' are clear favorites for me.
But it's all good. dEUS should put out albums like this every year.

Ray Wylie Hubbard is old enough to have his own son play on his records now. Oh, and some other old boys called Ringo Starr and Ian MacLagan. And Audley Freed, my personal favorite guitarist.
Ray Wylie Hubbard is also THE best story telling song writer on this planet.
Witty, sharp and wry observations a-plenty.
Be sure to check out the one about the stripper and Polk Salad Annie. I'll let you find out for yourselves.
The music? Solid country blues with a Rick Richards beat.
Another marvelous album in a long line of marvelous Hubbard albums.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost there, 14 May 2012
This review is from: Time'S All Gone (Audio CD)
This is old school Soul as done by a here and now artist.
The songs are up there with the classics, the playing is solid.
It's the voice I have a problem with. Too thin and shrill for real soul shouting and that's something that can't be camouflaged by the backing vocals.
Worthwhile effort that deserves three and a half stars.
Alas, not four.

5.0 out of 5 stars The word is written in black ink, 5 May 2012
This review is from: Black Of The Ink (Audio CD)
This beautifully packaged release is indeed more a book than a cd.
It contains all the lyrics to the songs David Eugene Edwards has written for Woven Hand.
Moreover he's written them in longhand himself.
There's also a six song cd containing reworked versions of one song from each of the six discs Woven Hand made for Glitterhouse records.
Simply a must have for all who love his work.
