The Enchantress of Florence
The Enchantress of Florence
by Salman Rushdie
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect book, 24 Jan. 2016
I loved it. It was so beautiful I was gutted when it ended. It is just as good as my favourites - satanic verses and shalimar the clown. What a masterpiece. Rushdie is insanely gifted with ability to write most moving and gorgeous sentences ever created.

Through the Embers of Chaos: Balkan Journeys
Through the Embers of Chaos: Balkan Journeys
by Dervla Murphy
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite Dervla book, 24 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the first book by Dervla Murphy I have ever read. I love this woman because she clearly says exactly what she thinks. I don't always agree with her views, especially about communism, but I realize these are 'tourist views' and it's interesting to hear them. She tends only to see good in people which if a bit exasperating is also really refreshing

2.0 out of 5 stars Not my kind of book, 24 Jan. 2016

This review is from: Following the Equator (Paperback)
I read Twain's account of travelling through Europe and even though there were some boring parts there, I was rewarded with some real pearls of fantasticly hilarious writing. Following the equator had hardly any good parts, I was so dissapointed

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better, 24 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was very surprised to learn the part of this book I enjoyed most was right at the start - about the smuggling and textile 'business'. Parts about neapolitan slums were also good. After that the book lost a lot of its human touch and quite frankly got boring. This guy killed those people, they killed some other people, but it all read like a bunch of numbers and statistics. Yawn. Picked up a bit towards the end but I was no longer interested.
