5.0 out of 5 stars Blue grass but not as you'd imagine, 15 Mar. 2010
Stunning album by Chris Jones, sounds crisp and clean with outstanding tonal range, chilled out and mellow. Who-ever was behind the mixing desk or in the producers chair deserves serious recognition. If you like JJ Cale and love acoustic guitar work with a country/blues twist this should be right up your street. As an aside, first class liner notes and chord changes noted for each song, ace!

Apparantly B&W speakers chose this album to demo the new 8000 range, enough said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty close to perfect., 18 Feb. 2010
This review is from: Bubblegum (Audio CD)
Great album, needs a few listens to get into the groove but what a trip.

Interesting use of multi track delayed vocals for all you techies and from a bass player, subtle lines.

If you're close to considering yourself a musician, this is how it's done.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful, 11 Feb. 2010

If you believe that the animation on 'Watership Down' is still relevent and cutting edge this appalling rip off is for you. Abysmal in everyway.

One star for the wrapped blue box it came in.

I was expecting the high end graphics associated with gamer disc animations, instead you get a third rate, poorly drawn travesty. Why issue on blu-ray? This rubbish is not worthy of VHS.

Shocking.

The game trailer stuck on as extras finally succeeds in effectively rubbing your nose in it with stunning graphics and detail. Some one somewhere is carressing their bank balance.

Avoid like the plague.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull and Unlistenable, 9 Feb. 2010
This review is from: Heligoland (Audio CD)
As the title suggests, almost unbearably unlistenable. A dreadful mish-mash of boring predictable beats and awful ill concieved vocal pairings. Compared to their back catalogue this is a real shocker. One star for the cover and the glittering CD print which is sort of 'cool'. Other than the fact it can be used to rest a cup or a glass on it, playing this will be limited to one or two occasions and possibly just to let other people hear how terrible it is.

As a live event, they shine and show what is achievable with an injection of soul. Why these performances were not transferred to CD is a mystery. Disappointing.

Appalling rubbish. The Banana Splits cover lifts it to one star otherwise a real stinker.

4.0 out of 5 stars Black Uhuru live, 15 Dec. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After seeing them live in a small venue in Edinburgh, this is as close as it gets. Worth it for the improvised bass/drum solo on the last track and the switch to rocking guitar mid song. Classic stuff. Not as good as the London Uhuru gig when Puma was still with us (a true gem)but worth looking into. Be aware, they actually play instruments live so it's not 'electronica' Sly and Robbie. When are we getting the tour with the Channel One allstars and Third World supporting?

5.0 out of 5 stars Strange and oddly compelling, 15 July 2009
This review is from: Horehound (Audio CD)
JW and all can never be accused of compartmentalisation, a strangely creepy mix of industrial voodoo this, music for discerning listeners not quite like anything I've heard before. Some great riff, beats and funky bass too, vocalisations are pretty dark but open the door and turn the volume up. It'll will never chart and thank goodness for that, Lux Interior must be spinning in the ground. Clever stuff and worth a punt.

2.0 out of 5 stars Kula Shaker and Instant Coffee, 22 Aug. 2007
This review is from: Strangefolk (Audio CD)
A disappointing return by a band who deserve a decent producer, the songwriting is lame and predictable and will date really badly ('I don't want my body wrapped in a flag' - Oh please), throughout the album musical ideas have been merged from other artists and it turns the selection of tunes into an erzatz mix-up. What a shame. Kula Shaker live are immense and inspiring, this collection is just insipid.

Listen to this and then the real coffee of K or Peasants Pigs and Astronauts, no comparison.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Uhuru - Sort of, 27 Jun. 2006

Apart from Duckie Simpson singing flat in the first song, the vocalists do a great job. This is as close as you're going to get to the classic Uhuru line up as Michael Rose only joined them briefly for a couple of gigs backing Grace Jones a couple of years ago. Robbie Shakespeare (Bass) is on fab form with some memorable licks and stunning rythmn work and Sly Dunbar is still obviously in control, nothing groundbreaking here apart from solid musicianship well crafted. Young pretenders take note, it helps if you can play your instruments.

It's a pity that 'Black Uhuru - Live' was never transferred from VHS, we can but hope.
