4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable overlooked film, 17 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: There Was A Young Lady [DVD] (DVD)
This was a movie new to me - one of the many "B" items now completely overlooked. Whilst it could not reasonably be rated among, or perhaps even approaching, more illustrious movies, it nevertheless is well worth a viewing, and is in some repects even more entertaining that some more highly rated films. Well worth a watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read, 9 Sept. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was supplied quickly and received in good condition. This is a story well worth reading, though I must say it helped to have seen the BBC production, which, though slightly amended in the adaptation, helped enormously to visualise the locations and characters depicted.

5.0 out of 5 stars compelling viewing, 13 Jun. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Winslow Boy [DVD] [1948] (DVD)
Virtually every film that Robert Donat appeared in was worth watching, and this is certainly no exception. The story is gripping, and the action evolves logically. I cannot believe that anyone who watches this film can be other than totally immersed in the story. Excellent.

3.0 out of 5 stars surfeit of repeats, 11 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is charming music extremely well played and conducted, but every repeat is observed, and whilst I think this is good and indeed essential in Beethoven, I cannot think the same for Mozart. The very beautiful Eine Kleine Nachtmusik for example runs for over twenty minutes, and, I'm afraid, outstays it's welcome. Less repeats, and perhaps an additional serenade thrown in, and this would have been truly excellent.

G.F. Handel: Choral Edition: Messiah (Watkins Shaw) - Paperback Edition Vocal Score
G.F. Handel: Choral Edition: Messiah (Watkins Shaw) - Paperback Edition Vocal Score
by Watkins Shaw
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.95

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent edition, 28 Jan. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This must be regarded as the standard and most useful edition of Messiah vocal scores. It is very meticulous, drawing attention to the variations available, and gives the alternative versions of arias &c., either in the general context, or in the appendix. Very scholarly, and very well laid out and printed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, 24 Oct. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
With Halliwell now appearing to restrict itself to only a selection of films, this seems to be as good a quide as any on the market. Of course, the reviews, as are all reviews, are subjective, and one may or may not agree with them, but they seem to give a fair and reasonable guide as to whether the film in question is likely to be to your personal taste. One cannot say fairer than that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 14 Oct. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is ideal to have the complete series available, as this was one of the very best comedy programmes ever produced. Naturally, there are comparative high spots and low spots, but this is a personal matter, and to heve all the programmes available means that favourite items omitted from "highlights" are avoided. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars victoria wood at almost her best, 14 Oct. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I remember seeing these programmes on TV, and it is a pleasure to be able to watch them again. They perhaps come as a very slight disappointment after "Victoria Wood as seen on TV", but they are still streets ahead of most other similar TV comedy programmes. Naturally, I find one or two more enjoyable than others, but that is a personal view, and it is ideal to have the whole series availaibe.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, 14 Oct. 2009

I found this very disappointing. The narration is only too oviously dubbed, and the animation is somewhat crude. I couldn't in all honesty recommend this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 8 Aug. 2009
When I purchased this CD I was not expecting it to be as good as it turned out to be. I have the two main works (Haydn and Hummel) played by Haken Hardenberger (who I belive has been a teacher of Alison Balsom), and I didn't think it was possible to improve on this, but I was wrong! Alison Balsom plays both works every bit as good, and manages to extract more contrast and tone colour from her instrument. It is Alison Balsom's disc which will played much more frequently than the earlier recording. Highly recommended.
