2.0 out of 5 stars If you've read one, you've read them all. A now tired, robotic display of upper class morality as seen through cynical eyes., 4 Oct. 2017

Apart from a couple of brilliant chapters in the middle, this appears to be le Carre and his publisher milking a tired formula.
Such a shame to see a master of his art prepared to put his name to such self-indulgent nonsense.

3.0 out of 5 stars This can't be this author's finest work, can it?, 7 Jun. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Put it this way. I finished it, but don't fancy reading another book by this author for some time to come.

Rather like a soap opera, I left with the impression the writer was marking off plot points on a whiteboard. No spontaneity.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is as bad as his best books are good. And those are very good indeed., 17 May 2017

If you want to read William Boyd, and you should, give this turgid, over-written novel a miss.
It tries so hard to be a literary masterpiece, with humour added to taste, and has all the hallmarks of a heroic failure.

Boyd's later books are staggering good, by comparison. He is a superb writer, but in this early book I've no idea what his objective was.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three terrific reads. Not to be missed., 5 May 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A superb trio of books. And each, in its own way, a reflection of a stage in life that is so easily forgotten . . . and wonderfully recalled here.

The writing is seeringly honest - few if any punches are pulled - and if readers don't recall horrendous and marvellous events in their own lives then indeed they must have led sheltered ones.

There are laughs, guffaws, wit, nostalgia, and above all else, wisdom. Don't miss out. Read before life leaves you behind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Find out why Midsomer really worked so well on TV., 22 April 2017

What a wonderful writer. No wonder it inspired a major TV series.
But the book is a delight: witty, intelligent and invites readers to create their own images rather than sofa gaze at actors doing the very best to interpret Caroline's plots.
This novel has sex, violence, adultery and a score of other sins that, in other hands, would make for gloomy thoughts. This book left me cheerful.
Anyone for disgraceful behaviour? I'm game.

1.0 out of 5 stars Well worth missing. Even Eastenders only lasts thirty minutes., 13 April 2017

This must be one of the most well written, self-indulgent, robotically-driven, lengthy and stylishly self-parodying nonsense I've ever attempted to complete.
And I'm afraid I gave up on it. I couldn't care for any of the characters, all of them classic le Carre inventions, speaking a sort of English that went out with constipation in Public schools when they upped the roughage intake.
Steer clear of this, unless you think le Carre is the world's finest writer . . . which appears to be his belief.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value, but remember this is an early example of his work., 20 Feb. 2017

This was the second book of Philip's I've read.

This is a great read, but if you like this one, then I'm sure you will find his later ones even better.

Speed read the Chandlerisms that suggest a fine writer who has had one over the eight, and you will enjoy the plots and writing more.

His later books are more accomplished and not so self indulgent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes Le Carre's efforts seem amateurish. If you value literary entertainment at full throttle, start here., 21 Jan. 2017

Having spent days struggling through one of Le Carre's turgid, self-indulgent novels - and feeling ever more suicidal - I turned to this novel fully prepared to abstain from espionage for life.
What a superb book! This, for me, is Mick's best book yet, being witty, informative and a wonderfully entertaining read.

I like Hugh Laurie . . . think he is a terrific actor, and an able writer.
This book would never have seen the light of day if his name hadn't been associated with it.
Of course, Hugh could write a splendid novel, but these things don't just happen, unless you are a gifted storyteller. And there are few of those about.
