5.0 out of 5 stars Rudolf Steiner and his masonic activities in the early 20th Century., 6 Dec. 2015

A heavy book with much repetition but nevertheless some very interesting material which I have not read anywhere else. The introductory passages on the origins of Freemasonry are inconclusive, as is the relationship of Freemasonry to the Rosicrucians and to the Knight Templars. I doubt that there is ever going to be an answer to these questions based on historical research.

A most interesting account of the events leading up to the Norman Conquest. There is vivid material on Harold's personal and family life. There is no doubt that Harold is the author's hero. Lord Lytton presents the Norman yolk view of English History and obviously regrets Harold's death and defeat at the Battle of Hastings.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Useful Aid to Learning Spanish., 12 Aug. 2015

A collection of interesting extracts on life and customs in the Hispanic world. The words and phrases translated into English at the side of the page are most useful for the learner, as it introduces him or her to new vocabulary without the effort of having to look up the dictionary all the time

A most interesting little volume. I had a copy when I was 14 years of age and it sparked off my interest in English Literature. I have never forgotten the extract from Francis Burney's Diary describing the excitement in Brussels on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo. I am so glad to have a copy in my possession once again..

An interesting account of experiences in the Spanish Civil War. I met one of the last survivors of the Aberdeen men who went to fight in the War, John Londragon. He described his experiences to me in 1992. He mentioned that he met Esmond Romilly who he referred to as " a hellova nice chap." Romilly is an interesting personality as he rebelled against his upper class background. He was a nephew of Churchill's wife, Clementine. From John Londragon's comment on him it is obvious that he could mix well with the ordinary working man such as John was.It is also interesting that Romilly later married one of the famous Mitford sisters, Jessica.

This review is from: The New Road (Hardcover)
I liked this book. I wanted to read on because there was a mystery to solve. I also thought that the book was well written and that Neil Munro deserves to be better known in the present time. he should not just be remembered for his Parra Handy Tales, good though they are. The New Road gives a good impression of Scotland in the time between the 1715 and the 1745 Jacobite Risings. It gives a vivid impression of famous characters of that period such as Duncan Forbes of Culloden and the Duke of Argyle and Simon Fraser.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Leader, 9 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My respect for Bill Slim came from my father who served in the Burma Campaign. Now that I have read this biography I have good evidence that this respect was well founded. What a man - a great leader who never gave up and achieved much against such adverse conditions. As a leader he had the common touch and could communicate with the ordinary soldier.

5.0 out of 5 stars A most interesting picture of life on the home front in World War Two., 9 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a most interesting account of life at home during the Second World War. It is very well written as one would expect from a member of the Robertson Nicoll family. Mrs. Miles was Constance Robertson Nicoll, a aughter of Sir William the famous editor of the British Weekly. Her comments in her journal give some interesting insights on life in the World War Two
