1.0 out of 5 stars Not a book that I would recommend, 26 Mar. 2014

In this book, Paul Kennedy reveals himself to be often ill-informed, as when, for example, he describes Goering 'ordering the Bf109s to stay close to the Bf110 bombers'! Bf110s were, of course, fighters! Elsewhere he refers to ' the miserably underperforming Avro Manchester bomber of the late 1930's ..... transformed by giving it Rolls-Royce engines (Merlins)', without apparently being aware that the Manchester had only two engines which were replaced with not just two but four of the Merlins! Such evidence of his failure to have a grip of the facts is all over the place.

And his American/English is full of infelicities, cliches and banalities :convoys experiencing'lousy weather'; 'refrigerated ships' (instead of 'refrigerator, presumably'); R.N. convoy escorts being described as 'the North Atlantic's equivalent (sic) of the Magnificent Seven'! 10-centimeter radar described as a 'facility'; radar pylons along the south-east coast of England described as 'tall trifid-like (sic) with pulsing machines (sic), set up in a chain'; 'blond, tousle-haired young men resting on the tarmac beside their Hurricanes'; and as a final example - there are many more - 'The 303 (Warsaw) squadron...shooting down...110 German planes...a small but nice (sic) revenge for the awful (sic) destruction of Warsaw.'

I was unable to finish this book. There's nothing I can commend in it. I'm doubtful whether it is worth even one star or justifiable to consider passing it on to a charity shop.

Marc Morris writes fluently and well on this complex subject. His analysis of the contemporary sources that every historian must base his conclusions on seems thorough and is lucidly argued and, to me, persuasive. If you want the facts along with the probabilities, this is for you. In all my reading about this fascinating time in our history, I have never read a more entertaining and satisfying book.

A superb book telling the full story of the spy who worked his magic for the British for almost all of WW2 and at the same time convinced the Germans that he was actually working for them. He succeeded in his work so well that not only did the British awarded him a medal but so did the Germans! An amazing story, especially so, I imagine, if you are a German.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Peter Bull, 21 April 2012

This review is from: TO SEA IN A SIEVE. (Hardcover)
This deals with the WW2 experiences naval experiences of a professional actor. If you have seen Alastair Sim's film "Scrooge" you will have seen the stoutly built Peter Bull playing the small part of the businessman who unsuccessfully pleads with Scrooge on Christmas Eve for a charitable donation for the poor; and playing the Captain of the German ship who so reluctantly agrees to marry Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn - before executing them - at the end of the film "The African Queen". He played many such small parts in many British films of the 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's. Throughout the war he served as a volunteer officer in Landing Craft. In spite of the grim nature of the war he experienced, the book is highly entertaining (often very funny) and very informative of the vital role played in it by these small craft. I highly recommend it - if you can find a copy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jane All at Sea, 21 April 2012

This is an excellent book dealing with the writings of Jane Austen from a rather narrow and special point of view. It deals in some detail with her brothers' real experiences of life in the R.N. during the Napoleonic wars; and with Jane Austen's relationship with them and the lives they led. You might say that it offers those readers who can't get enough information about Jane the opportunity to look at aspects her life and works not usually considered. A very original book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The facts, 24 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an extremely informative book. Any questions you may have about 'Garbo' it will answer. The story is breathtaking in what it tells the reader about the extent to which the German intelligence services and the Nazi hierarchy right up to and including Hitler were taken in by this Spanish citizen, a passionate anti-fascist, and his British controllers. However, it is not at all novelettish in the telling and, therefore, aliitle dry at times.

Excellent book, highly readable and factually both balanced and informative. The writer presents himself as a serious historian anxious to remain detached from faction in order to present the reader with the nearest we are ever likely to get to the truth.
