4.0 out of 5 stars Captures the mind as it tells the story, 28 July 2015

This review is from: The Trick of the Dead (Paperback)
I read the book about a year ago. There is curiosity right from the start which kept me engaged for the three or four days I was reading the book. The ideas, people and actions at the start develop and are explored in many ways and where we wind up is in a rather different place in the fiction and in our own minds. Fast paced whilst also somehow lingering - be prepared to pause to mingle with some of the many mind catching thoughts and ideas and impressions en route. There is that same lasting impression that we have from those enthralling fairy stories from our earliest youth where all sorts of experiences wonders and worries are richly told and explored; and remembered for life. Glad I read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful addition for Fujifilm X20, 19 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this mainly for it's car connector lead. Fujifilm X20 is a very comprehensive camera which means that you can sometimes use a lot of battery. I therefore have two batteries used alternately - being able to also re-charge one in the car during a day out with the camera can therefore be very handy. Works well, good value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying case, 19 Jan. 2014

The Fujifilm X20 is a nice, fine quality camera to use without any case - however it is a camera that you come to care about and I am happier if I have it 'wrapped' when going out and about. There are several cases made for the X20 this one is about £25 more than I expected to pay for a suitable case - but this case really is very neatly tailored for the X20, I have not resented that extra £25 . In the full case closed the camera is very well protected. Top half of case drops down after release of magnet catch and allows full use of the camera. This top half can be unfastened from its two sturdy press stud fastenings leaving the camera in a skeleton leather base and sides which hold the camera well - In this mode it is actually not that much different from using the camera with no case. Strap fastens to the camera lugs at all times, leather case has clips that hold it to the strap, camera fits tight, safe and snug into this bottom part of the case. Be aware though that you will need to fully lift the camera out of the case to gain access to battery/card bay and also for access to the side external connections bay. Not difficult or lengthy but does take a few moments. Also be aware that the way that the top of the case opens is counter intuitive - but should not be because when you have used it you will realise that all cases should open this way - the magnetic fastener is at the base, the front of the case lifts up and flips back over the top of the camera and hangs down behind ( in such a way that all back controls etc. are fully accessible, and the top part of the case is hanging down below the camera and well clear from any possibility of obstructing the lens' view). If you were happy to pay the price for this camera then I think, like me, you will be well content with the price paid for this case to keep it in.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well balanced flash gun for Fujifilm X20, 19 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Built in flash for X20 is quite modest in size - the camera has all the potential to use something larger. This one is quite light and fits neatly and firmly into the top camera shoe. Rotates just vertically to allow bounce flash use. Fully integrates with Fujifilm's electronic controls. Have to admit to not having had time yet to explored all possibilities for this camera/flash combination because it is quite comprehensive. It is however quite expensive because it feels rather light and insubstantial in comparison with the camera which by contrast is satisfyingly robust - but that is probably intentionally so - a heavy flash gun would I think disturb the admirable balance of the camera (however this lightness and feel is why I rate it 4 as against a 5 that I rate the camera). You need to think about the extent that you will use a flash before buying - if it is only very seldom then you may find yourself thinking this is too expensive; however if you intend to be using flash to enhance your photographs more frequently ( I do) then you will probably be pretty happy with this balance of power, weight, integration with the camera, and price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good purchase, 19 Jan. 2014

Also works for the Fujifilm X20 which I have - less than 10% refers to a particular way that the X10 worked, quite simple to ignore that. I think this book is star value. The manufacturer's own manual with the camera is complete and correct, but it is small and sparingly precisely correct , text is small and reproductions of symbols sometimes too small to be readable. This book sweeps away all those reservations. The writer is photographically knowledgeable but writes this book as someone who has worked his way systematically through how this camera works, what it does, how it does it and why it does it. It will save you hours from the time it will take you to do that from just the manufacturers' booklet. Only if you value your own time at £1 or less an hour would you find this book a poor buy! There is so much that the X20 can do - this book has helped me understand and access all that. It is well and accurately written, very clear, an easy to read style, well spaced page layouts in clear well sized font. Skim through quickly to pick up the way that he structures his exploration of the camera and the extent of the photographic control that is available there. You will then find yourself working through a chapter at a time with the camera to hand. For cost reason it has only black and white pictures but I don't find that a problem in learning most of the things about the camera (you evidently can get the colour pictures by e-mailing the author). Standard quality normal paperback with photographs and diagrams. Just the job!

4.0 out of 5 stars A lot of money for the Fujifilm name?, 19 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have the similar Fujifilm X20 camera which uses the same battery. Depending on what controls are switched on and how you are using the camera, battery use can be reasonably heavy, and length a battery charge lasts shorter as a result; to the extent that a spare battery is prudent. The camera uses a standard battery size and type. I decided to buy the Fujifilm own branded part. Works OK but it is expensive although of course it should last a long time so in the overall scheme of things its costs is not all that significant. However I have to admit to feeling unhappy about maybe paying a disproportionate amount of money just for the name on the cover which is why I have rated it 4 not 5. If I was buying a further battery I would choose a same specification cheaper one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful back support, 19 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If I take care of my back I have no trouble but I need some support if I am going to be lifting stuff. I need something to just hold the lower back, muscles and structure correctly in place. I have been using a simple neoprene wrap round support but this is worn and needed replacing. This new belt does the same but is better. It is in two parts - a wide neoprene partially elasticated wrap round. That is nice and wide and also has some useful vertical 'whale bones' either side of the spine. My waist diameter at top of pelvic bone is 36" the belt (marked large) is 42" long and needs to overlap at ends to fasten by means of its continuous Velcro type facings. Belt is 9" wide and thus covers a good depth of the lumbar region. There is also a stronger elasticated overlay belt which separately pulls to your own tensioning and secures to the same large Velcro facings of the underlying belt. There is therefore a large range of fit and tension that you can adjust to suit needs. This works very well for me. The whole thing is not cumbersome and it is quite light and sufficiently flexible to make it comfortable to wear and work in. Obviously not as comfortable and flexible as having a sound back and not having to wear a belt at all! I find it easy to put on and wear and I have not had any back problem since. Very good value and a well made basic support belt for everyday relatively light uses. I do not have any major back problem such as slipped disk - this belt may be inadequate for that or for more significant such back problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars DP - kent uk, 3 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is exactly what it is which is why I rate it five star. If you do not use an electric power flosser then this is the next best thing - nowhere near as powerful but it is simple, works well, needs no power or batteries, and cleans between and under teeth where a toothbrush does not reach.
If you do already use a power flosser then this will seem a bit weak and lacking - but get one anyway because it is lightweight and ideal for holidays (also pretty useful for the days at home when you have forgotten to charge up your normal power flosser!). Should last and work
for ages.
