1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute garbage, 5 Jun. 2016
This review is from: My Brilliant Friend: 1 (Paperback)
First, the translation is atrocious. The English is wooden, lacks style and follows Latinate forms too closely - e,g. "smiled with cordiality": that, not atypical example, is routine. Badly written book, badly translated. Steer clear.

4.0 out of 5 stars Butterfly, 18 Dec. 2014

Very good.

Not as good as Caravanserai, but very little is. But funky, jazzy keyboards and the percussion, as always with Santana, is superb. Very much of its time - jazz rock, basically. Second (instrumental) half of Life Is Anew is just great, lovely uplifting guitar and jazzy keyboards.

Standing in Another Man's Grave (A Rebus Novel)
Standing in Another Man's Grave (A Rebus Novel)

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 3 Sept. 2014
The first Rankin book that I found underwhelming and lazy. The plot is threadbare at best, the characters - Rebus excepted - are unconvincing, the style is sloppy and the denouement isn't even remotely credible.

Rankin is normally masterful in depicting the way Rebus crashes around creating chaos and confusion which all comes together into something meaningful by the end of his stories. In this one, the genre elements are all there - two or three apparently unconnected sub-plots, red-herrings, local hoods trying to get in on the action, obstruction from withing the force - but the parts just don't add up to a satisfying whole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chopin Pollini, 6 May 2014

What can you get for £30 these days? I went for a delicious meal at a French restaurant a few days ago - £50 a head. Cinema tickets for 3 or 4 people for a single film would be £30 to £45.

Admittedly you need to spend the money on a half decent stereo to listen to these CDs, but if you're reading this review, presumably you are at least thinking about having something to listen to these CDs on (personally, I recommend that you spend some cash on your equipment if you like classical music).

This box set is magnificent. Chopin composed some sumptuous, romantic and complex works for the piano and Pollini knows how to play them. Beautiful clean recordings - the engineering of the sound is wonderful, clean, uncluttered and not over produced.

Nothing more to say really - if you're wondering about buying this, think no longer. If you've got the money, there's really no reason (in terms of product quality) to decide not to.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm with the fans, 24 May 2013
This review is from: The Next Day (Audio CD)
Superb album. I'm not a Bowie fanatic, but appreciate that he is a British institution and he deserves credit for constantly attempting to defy categrorization. Certainly his catalogue includes some very good work and some that is less good. This album belongs in the former category. It might even be the best thing he's done.

What's really good about this album is that it's very straightforward - it doesn't aim at any particular style and you don't feel that Bowie is doing anything other than writing, playing and singing some songs. It's just very classy 21st century rock and roll.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like it, 24 May 2013
This review is from: Tin Machine II (Audio CD)
I've only recently heard the Tin Machine albums - I think I had absorbed this general notion that Bowie had done nothing good since Scary Monsters. Well both Tin Machine albums are very good in my opinion.

Noisy, classy, hard-edged rock and roll - I guess people were disappointed because they were judging Bowie rather than the music for itself: frankly, if this music had been released by a group of unknowns, it would have received critical acclaim.

Gary Burton is really in a class of his own. He's seemingly inexhaustible in his ideas and his playing is a dream. Great band he's got together here too - smooth and groovy, very energetic, but very together.

A CD full of great ideas and wonderful playing - makes you feel good to be alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Donald's voice, 2 May 2013

I've very little to say about this because 100/120 reviews at 4 and 5 pretty much says it all.

However, one thing I would like to emphasize is that Fagen's voice is getting better with age - it's getting deeper, but he's not losing his ability to hit the higher notes. I think this extra vocal range adds some layers of richness that perhaps have not been apparent in his earlier stuff (including SD stuff).

In terms of his singing, I think this is the best album he's done.

Not really much point writing a review of this album other than to say my piece about a work of genius.

It's really very difficult to say why the Beatles were so damn good, but there's not really any need because it's all on Abbey Road.

I like it better than any other Beatles album (which makes it something special). The whole album is of a breathtaking standard, but side 2 is unique in its artistry. I think it's the best 25 minutes of pop music ever produced by an English band.
