The Road to Little Dribbling: More Notes From a Small Island (Bryson)
The Road to Little Dribbling: More Notes From a Small Island (Bryson)
by Bill Bryson
Edition: Paperback
Price: £3.99

4.0 out of 5 stars It’s hardly consistent thinking for someone who should know better., 21 May 2016
He does risk becoming more of a grumpy old man than the amusing observant of his earlier books, but there’s still enough special moments to make this an enjoyable read. My main gripe was his reluctance to pay fees to historical attractions or for quality British food, yet he constantly reminds us that if we want to safeguard our heritage we have to be willing to pay for it. It’s hardly consistent thinking for someone who should know better.

The Orchardist
The Orchardist
by Amanda Coplin
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

3.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story that unfortunately loses its way., 18 April 2014
This review is from: The Orchardist (Paperback)
After reading the first half of this book I was tempted to write a glowing five-star review of Amanda Coplin's debut novel. The pastoral existence of Talmadge and those around him is set against a disturbing background of rural poverty and abuse. Unfortunately, the book seems to lose its way towards the end, especially with a less than convincing account of an attempted escape from custody. After such a promising start, the story fizzles out disappointingly, but the beauty of some of the writing would tempt me to try the author’s future work again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a disappointment., 24 Sept. 2013
This review is from: Warp And Weft (Audio CD)
I don't normally review albums, but felt compelled to counter the earlier one-star review. Personally, I prefer the more stripped-back acoustic feel of July Flame and some of Laura's earliest albums, but this is still a decent release by her high standards.

The 'edgier' sound isn't anything new on her albums and it certainly doesn't compromise some wonderfully soulful tunes - particularly on the first half of the album. Lookout for the melody on Shape-Shifter, which is partly reminiscent of the Rolling Stones's Angie.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 17 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Adequate as a wall road-map, but of limited use when travelling or navigating. The scale was far too small to hold any useful detail away from the main motorways.

We ended up having to buy regional Falk maps to navigate local roads and locate smaller towns/villages.

The Misremembered Man
The Misremembered Man
by Christina McKenna
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.64

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely tale, 19 April 2013
This review is from: The Misremembered Man (Paperback)
A lovely story based on an all too-real and gruesome history of childhood abuse. Although the ending is fairly predictable, the strength of the gentle characters and wonderful dialogue carries it off superbly.

The Snow Child
The Snow Child
by Eowyn Ivey
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.19

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Tale, 27 Mar. 2013
This review is from: The Snow Child (Paperback)
This book really drew me in, switching throughout from fairy tale to the story of a childless couple's life together. There wasn't too much sentiment for the unfortunate Alaskan wildlife in such a harsh environment, but still a beautiful tale.

I've loved Damien's earlier stuff so was looking forward to hearing this latest album, but I think it's his weakest release so far.

The voice and his spirit are still there, but there's no stand-out tracks - plus I found too many of the songs a bit lame and the lyrics clichéd.

I've wasted eight out of ten discs on failed burns so far. The rest are going to the charity shop - a real waste of time & money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great old photo's, 29 Jun. 2012

This book is worth buying just for the brilliant old photographs, many of which are previously unpublished.

It's only let down by some of the contemporary comparison shots - many of which are of variable quality or completely different angles/aspects to the older photographs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 26 Nov. 2011
Unlike the majority of reviews, I found this by far the weakest of Welch's albums.

David Rawlings's contribution is his best since the highs of Revelator and there's a pleasing stripped-back sound, but the songs are bland and uninspiring. A real let down - especially after such a long wait since Soul Journey.
