Play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul
Play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul
by Christopher Vaughan
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible, Engaging and Useful, 11 Aug. 2016
The message of this book is clear. Play your whole life with all your body, mind and spirit and you will not only have a blast but be productive too. The caveat is sometimes playing is hard work so Stuart is not saying simply put your feet up. Get in touch with your true playful self. How did you play when you were a child? Paradoxically play seems purposeless but achieves its purpose nevertheless. Superbly written in a very accessible and engaging style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film about a positive role model, 13 April 2016

This review is from: Temple Grandin (Amazon Video)
From the start of this film I was mesmerised by Claire Danes' portrayal of Temple Grandin. I was also impressed by the care that had gone into the production. Temple's visual thinking is illustrated in an extraordinary way. One slight criticism is the slightly goofy way people behave around her towards the end of the film. It's like the film makers are saying 'how lovely we Americans are when we finally get it'. I shed a few tears over this movie and it's not often that happens. If you want to get the background to this story read 'Neurotribes' by Steve Silberman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating modern history of autism, 11 April 2016
I came to the subject of autism aged 53, around 26th November 2014, when it was suggested by a CBT professional that I might be on the spectrum. On 30th April 2015 I was given the label Asperger's syndrome by a clinical psychologist. I've read 'The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome' by Tony Attwood and various other texts and found them helpful in different ways. This is the first book that gives me a feel for the history of the subject mainly starting with the work of Kanner and Asperger in the mid 20th century. One has the feeling that this is about a civil rights movement. At over 500 pages it takes some commitment. But I found it very much worth the journey. This is still the beginning of the road however. The era we are living in is very much a transitional one and it's what happens next that will be of vital importance.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Film, 10 April 2016
This review is from: Rain Man [DVD] [1989] (DVD)
This has become a classic movie about Raymond an autistic savant. It really does have a lot of depth. Dustin Hoffman is superb and Tom Cruise also turns in a great performance. It seems to get a bit icky at around 90 minutes in, but hang in there, for a fitting climax to a great film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heart warming film about autism, 10 April 2016
This review is from: x+y [DVD] (DVD)
I think this is a lovely film. Nathan, a child on the autistic spectrum, has difficulty showing emotions and needs repetitive regularity almost to the point of obsession. When he meets a young Chinese girl and fellow maths prodigy his emotions are slowly awakened. When forced to choose between mathematical distinction and love he chooses love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Gypsy Jazz, 28 Feb. 2016

This is great music. I just wanted a CD's worth as some of the larger box sets would be too much for me. I am just beginning to learn jazz guitar. Django Reinhardt is the man for me. And make no mistake. This is a man whose first love is Debussy. I think I can say that this is a classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Music but not Great, 28 Feb. 2016
This review is from: COLDPLAY-LIVE2003-DVD+CD (DVD)
This is obviously a very talented band captured powerfully here. I sure wish there was a bit of a change of tempo here and there. Lots of repeated notes and chords with singing reminiscent of Michael Stipe. This is basically a ballads outfit. But I don't want to be churlish. If you're a fan I doubt you'll be disappointed. Watch out for the packaging as the CD and DVD come out at different ends using a clever internal mechanism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Purchase, 28 Feb. 2016
This is a lovely package consisting of a one hour documentary on DVD, a CD of real quality and an interesting booklet. At the end of the CD is a half hour interview with Bob which must have been recorded in 1978 around the release of Kaya. If you are at all interested in Bob Marley or reggae music or Rastafarianism you will find this an exciting purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crisp playing in a varied set, 19 Feb. 2016

This review is from: Bach (Audio CD)
I bought this CD for mum and dad as a Christmas present. We have all enjoyed the crisp playing. It includes a trio sonata by C.P.E. Bach which is possibly the highlight of the collection. This gifted young violinist and her oboist husband are musical royalty in our midst.

The Autistic Spectrum: A Guide for Parents and Professionals
The Autistic Spectrum: A Guide for Parents and Professionals
by Lorna Wing
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.65

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Guide for Parents with a young family containing an autistic child, 19 Feb. 2016
As somebody fairly recently diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, and being familiar with Lorna Wing who coined the phrase, I was naturally interested in this book. It didn't disappoint although most of it was not directly relevant to me as I am quite high-functioning. The book contains lots of useful tips for parents written in a clear and engaging style. It offers hope for those who are shell shocked after their child has been identified as autistic with some associated learning difficulty. Particularly useful are the sections on bringing up a young family containing an autistic child. One region in which the book falls down is that there is only passing discussion of so-called autistic families in which a genetic component can be identified. But that's a minor quibble.
