5.0 out of 5 stars Superb entertainment, 8 Feb. 2013

I watched this the first time around but enjoyed it even better this time. I agree with some of the criticisms. Janet Suzman is a little irritating playing the younger Hilda with a rather high pitched voice. However at 37 she was playing a 21 year old! Putting this to one side her acting along with the rest of the cast is excellent, particularly the late Harry Andrews. Suzman does capture beautifully Hilda's enigmatic and egotistical personality and there is a lovely chemistry between herself and Peter McEnery. For me the real joy of the book and DVD is the wonderful exploration of the father son relationship and later a marriage of opposites. Edwin's brutalised father is unable to show the love he has for his son and one of the most moving scenes is when following the death of Darius Edwin finds his schoolboy paintings in his fathers safe which at the time of producing had been scorned by his father. The depth and intensity of the production is amazing which means it remains very faithful to the three books. If it was being produced today it would only be given about half the time and treated in a much shallower way. Don't hesitate in buying this DVD,you are in for a real treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Soap Opera, 28 Nov. 2011
An enjoyable historical soap opera which stands the test of time quite well. It's got everything, war, violence, bodice ripping and sex/rape, twists and turns and unbelievable coincidences. At times an emotional roller coaster and with plenty of 'over the top' acting. Series three runs out of steam, with most of the main leads changing actor, which dents the credibility of the whole piece. Don't buy it as a present for any 'arty farty' friends they would not appreciate it.

1.0 out of 5 stars An insult to parents, 9 Dec. 2010
This review is from: ALREADY GONE (Paperback)
I rate this as an appalling book. It's central thesis is that if you don't teach young earth creationism in church and sunday school children are in grave danger of being eternally lost. This rules out just about every church in England, do I need to say any more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Faulty Design, 27 Sept. 2010
I have recently purchased a back friend. Its good to sit on, however design of the fittings are a joke. By the time you have forced the hinge fitting through the seat eyelet (which is difficult) the plastic is already considerably weakened, you can tell as the plastic has already turned white under the strain. This means its life is shortened, particularly if you want to move the seat alot. If this is modified it would be a good product

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully built and beautiful sound, 25 Feb. 2008
I bought this system on the strength of the incredible reviews. It really is fantastic. A lovely balanced and rounded sound. My new Ipod Nano fits perfectly and there is enough power to fill a normal sized room. I am so glad I did not spend the extra money on a Bose.
