This is a book about some of the bravest and most proficient soldiers of all time, written by a soldier who knew many of them. He can write and the stories are gripping. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Has the ring of truth, 16 Nov. 2008

This review is from: Killing Rommel (Hardcover)
Steven Pressfield is a superb reasearcher with a real feel for time and place. I have enjoyed all of his books to date. This one is a cracker. It has the ring of truth, because it is a novel woven around real events and facts. Mr Pressfield is a true craftsman in the best possible way. You LIVE the story while he is telling it. And this story is not simply action all the way. Human feelings and emotions are also portrayed. The Brits are not all heroes and the Germans are not all "baddies". Like the soldiers of the time who fought with him and against him, Steven Pressfield shows respect for Erwin Rommel, a great soldier who happened to be on the "wrong" side.

If Mr Pressfield never writes another word, his works will live on and this is one of his best. Chapeau!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth waiting for, 5 Oct. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Revival (Audio CD)
It has been a long time coming but the end result is a quality product. My girlfriend and I listened to it for the first time on a long drive across Germany and Belgium and we liked it so much that we let it repeat several times. The melodies are good, the musicianship is first class and some of the political comment is very apt. he even nods in the direction of CCR a couple of times. Great stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Science Fiction as literature, 13 May 2008

I have to agree with Hooligween "Rowena the Red". This is s very enjoyable book. Richard Morgan writes well and fluently and his fast-moving storylines are great. I buy anything he writes as soon as it comes out, because it is guaranteed to be good.

1.0 out of 5 stars So it won the Booker. So what?, 17 Oct. 2007
This review is from: The Gathering (Hardcover)
The Booker Prize is becoming icreasingly irrelevant as the books that are shortlisted bear no relation to what people are actually reading. I consider myself an intellectual but I can not see how the self-elected, highbrow judges arrive at their judgements. This book is about as interesting as watching paint dry and it won! Makes you wonder what the losers were like!

BTW it is impossible to post a review without giving any stars, which is why this book gets 1 star.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am hooked., 17 Oct. 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought Altered Carbon on a whim, in a 3 for the price of 2 deal in a bookshop in England. I have subsequently bought all of Richard Morgan's works. I finished Broken Angels last night on a flight back from Geneva. Looking forward to starting the next although I have 2 new Bernard Cornwell novels and a pile of other books waiting. That is how good Richard Morgan is! He is first and foremost an excellent writer. Whether Sci-Fi is your thing or not is irrelevant - the books are mystery thrillers and action-packed and thought-provoking. In between the breathless action sequences they actually have something to say about us as humans. 5 stars are not enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars A rambling but interesting one-man soliloquy ...., 28 July 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A rambling but interesting one-man soliloquy on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Quentin had some thought-provoking ideas and was a master of the "ad-glib" as he would say. I rather liked the way he dismissed Oscar Wilde's "Love that dare not speak its name" quote. A quick read - I doubt if it took me much more than an hour to devour this little book and it certainly made me smile in places. Sting wrote a song about him - "An Englishman in New York". Quentin was certainly a one-off eccentric and I probably would have liked him had I met him.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mildly entertaining but no Wuthering Heights, 5 Jun. 2007
This review is from: A Young Man's Passage (Paperback)
I picked up this book in a 3 for the price of 2 offer at W. H. Smiths (sorry Amazon). As such it did not cost me much. I ran through it in about 2 evenings, over dinner at a hotel. It was mildly entertaining but not wildly so. I passed it on to a gay friend of mine who enjoyed it much more than I did. Julian Clary seems to have glossed over most of his life. Even the sexy bits in the book were superficially handled. I believe, if you are going to bring sex into it, then do so wholeheartedly, not in a sniggering behind your hand sort of way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neil Jordan is a genius, 29 May 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am goinf to take issue with Mike Leonard's review. Transamerica was NOT the better film. Transamerica was a road movie with a few nods in the direction of transsexualism and it left me very disappointed. Breakfast on Pluto on the other hand actually explores some of the transgender issues while, at the same time, being an absolute delight to watch, full of humour and music as well as tragedy and turmoil.

Neil Jordan is a genius because he took the book Breakfast on Pluto and made this wonderful film out of it. The book was absolutely average and I sold my copy on eBay after reading it. Ths film is brilliant. But then, what do you expect from the director who gave us "The Crying Game" (still my favourite film of all time).

Confessions Of A Transsexual Porn Star

4.0 out of 5 stars Thanks Meghan, 29 May 2007
This book may not be great literature, and it would have benefited from being proof-read, but it is honest, frank and fascinating. I have personal knowledge of the transgender scene and every word rings true. Meghan Chavalier takes the lid off her life and tells it like it is. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and can recommend it to anyone with an interest in its subject matter.

So why only 4 stars - well, as I said, it should have been proof-read to get rid of the many spelling and punctuation errors. However, you do get the feeling that you are listening to Meghan's own voice talking.
