5.0 out of 5 stars Like her equally remarkable predecessor, 10 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A balanced, well-written and researched but sympathetic biography of a remarkable ruler of the then largest country and nation in the world. Like her equally remarkable predecessor, Peter I, she was a reformer but better educated in the Enlightenment style. As a copious correspondent with western European philosophers, scientists and rulers, she personified the 'benign autocrat'. An insight into her turbulent private life does not detract from the revelation of her dedication and diligence in her public life.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The frank and honest observations of the wife of the German philosopher in this journal of her prolonged and dogged trips to some stately homes and town houses of the English and Scottish nobility are fascinating for the details of late-Georgian life and manners.

This short but detailed examination of the evidence surrounding the indictment of those involved in the Gunpowder Plot leaves some questions unanswered and suspicions of political chicanery cannot be denied.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is unfortunately a very outdated and Euro-centric dissertation on racial characteristics, using virtually only skull measurements as criteria for classification. The superiority of the 'Nordic' race is constantly expounded. Theories of racial migrations and subsequent composition of populations are put forward, some of which are still accepted but the general attitude in defining racial characteristics can only be described as fanciful rather than scientific.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is really a clever psychological thriller, written with sensitivity and insight by a master short story-teller. The reader is given finely judged clues as to the protagonist's real state of mind but the ending is still a shock.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Despite the passage of time between his wartime experiences and writing about them, the author's description of people, places and feelings are as fresh and vibrant with immediacy as if he had just returned home. With typical British self-deprecation, he plays down his innate bravery and only reveals his dogged determination in hair-raising, but laconically related, episodes of trying to survive in German-occupied Italy and woo the feisty young Slovene woman whom he later married.

3.0 out of 5 stars A rousing tale of Roman army practices based on historical battles, 14 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Written in a rather 'Boys' Own Paper' style, it nevertheless gives interesting details of Roman army practices and tactics and describes Caesar's personality and methods of waging the Galic Wars.

4.0 out of 5 stars A detailed yet balanced exposition of the character of Charles I and how this affected the political scene., 13 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Charles I (Kindle Edition)
A masterly and nuanced view of a difficult and complex man and the changes which the King's predecessors and his contemporaries wrought to the fabric and politics of the British Isles the early 17th century. The author describes the hubris and dual personality of Charles I that inevitably brought about the upheaval and turmoil of the Civil War. Mr. Massie refers often to the views on certain episodes in Charles's life from other historians and offers cool and balanced arguments to elucidate his perspective of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Using the muscularity and beauty of the English language to describe the Fall of Man and his salvation, 13 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I hadn't dipped into Milton since school days and was again enchanted by the depth and range of language and imagery which chracterises this epic poetry. Perhaps the combinaton of his strong faith, his blindness and his daughter's devotion helped MIlton to depict the scenes of the Fall of Man and his salvation in such rich colours to achieve the pinnacle of the u se of the English language.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rollicking historical adventure story for boys., 5 Aug. 2013

The dialogue made attempts at contemporary coloquialism but ended up sounding rather like Georgette Heyer's dialogue in her Regency novelettes.
