Peaks and Troughs: The Ups and Downs in the Life of a Liverpool Entrepreneur
Peaks and Troughs: The Ups and Downs in the Life of a Liverpool Entrepreneur

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Peaks not too many Troughs, 8 April 2012
Peaks and Troughs
It's been a privilege of mine to have known Phil Birtwistle for some time, and I remember many of the key events celebrated in this book. It is, therefore, a memoir not only for Phil but for the people who have shared the same periods of time. Unlike Phil and his family's friends of many years, I'm not speaking of his personal life but the more public events like the development of Merseymart. In addition the personal memories are amusing, sometimes sad, but usually gloriously described for those of us who know Liverpool and North Wales and now Spain. One of the most amazing thing about the book to me is that I didn't know Phil until we met in Spain. Born and educated in Liverpool and having lived in Widnes for my first 16 years and a few others later, and later still in North Wales, we never ran into each other. A delight of this book then is that it is a well written and rollicking story of a British life, but not that of some jumped-up toff, but a real and talented individual.

This is a book for anyone with an interest in the second half of the twentieth century and likes a good read and much chuckling, with many belly laughs too.

This boot has every advantage required by the regular but not necesarily too adventurous walker. I walk a lot but am not over ambitious. Ths comfortable breathable and water resistant boot allows me to walk out for a couple of hours and then enjoy a drink or two at the end of the walk, in absolute comfort.

5.0 out of 5 stars A laptop desk for the knee, 8 Jan. 2010
For the price, this is a great buy and a useful companion to your laptop or netbook. It gives a stable platform and enable the temperature regulation of your computer to work effectively which merely resting it on the knee may prveent. It has a small but effective LED lamp and is confortable and well made.

5.0 out of 5 stars An oldie but goodie, 8 Jan. 2010
This review is from: Beer and Skittles (Paperback)
So this book is out of date. Essentially that doesn't matter, though an update would be welcome. This is a history of brewing and beer drinking in the UK, and although it doesn't plot the 'final' demise of the British pub and the rise of the microbrewery, it takes to the beginning of the end with the advent of accountants beer and lager. I lost my copy many years ago and I bought this one second hand as an essential replacement for a masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crime story telling at its zenith, 8 Jan. 2010
This review is from: A Place of Execution (Paperback)
To cut a long story short, the precis of the story given by previous reviewers don't need further repetition. The setting of the tale in the High Peak is convincing and the characters are well drawn and believable as are the situations in which they find themselves. This is a book written by a great writer and one who knows not solely how to create an entrancing story, but one who knows the art of writing. The ending is thought provoking in the best way in that it continues to engage one after the book has been closed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good Companion, 30 Dec. 2009
The 1001HA is my first experience of Asus and as a replacement for an excellent netbook had a lot to live up to. I use it as a home computer and a travelling computer so it has to be reliable and functional. It has more than lived up to these expectations.

I have updated the WinXP to Win 7 and though not supported by ASUS at first, drivers and updates are pouring on to the excellent support site already. The machine works faster than any pc I've had before and the keyboard and operating bits and pieces are comfortable and work well. With the addition of a wireless mouse, ear phones and a 3 dongle I've got a great light portable pc, and the wifi is brilliant. I get a good four and a half hour battery life and have invested in a 6 cell spare battery which gives me another 8 hrs. without much increase in the weight of my bag.

If what you want is a really portable pc at an amazingly low price, this is it.

Grave Secrets
Grave Secrets
by Kathy Reichs
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars The very best standard, 27 Nov. 2009
This review is from: Grave Secrets (Paperback)
Kathy Reichs is by far the best writer of this genre and this is no exception. She goes into great forensic detail and if you like Cornwell you will like Reichs, though in my opinion Reichs is the better writer. If you don't know Reichs, she is a real forensic anthropologist whose heroine, Temperance Brennan is the central character of the Bones TV series. However, the literary Tempe is a different character and shares much more with her author than with the TV character. This book is centred on Guatemala, where Kathy Reichs was actually involved in the identification of the 'disappeared' from the bad old days. It is both detailed and fast paced and takes Tempe and us through the whole range of emotions. It's a must read for KR fans, and you won't be disappointed.
