2.0 out of 5 stars Far too sensitive, 16 Jun. 2016

Hmmmm...have just put this on my moggie, and it's far too sensitive. It's going off even when he's sitting still. He just has to move his head. Will give it a couple of days to see if he continues to bring in birds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect beautiful ghost story, 21 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Story of You (Kindle Edition)
Another strange ghost story by Myerson, always so absorbing, although frustratingly opaque if you like a bit of plot explanation every now and then. Best to give yourself up to her strange imagination, and allow yourself to be twirled around in her real/ unreal worlds. She is simply the best at domestic dramas of loss - usually the loss of children - in which the ache of grief punctures the membraneous (as she sees it) wall between present and past. Living characters then interact with dead characters, who are as real, as living as themselves, and the relationships that grow are just achingly beautiful. Read The Lost Child and The Stopped Heart. I read them again and again: never tire of her vision of the past as something you can touch and see and hear all around you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Like watching an insect writhing on a pin, 21 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Oh gosh. They don't write women characters like this anymore, thankfully. A super-smart middle-class girl who can outwit fearsome bosses and an overpowering mother but becomes a passive victim when she marries an abusive working-class weakling. Give me strength. Well written (Dickens - granddaughter of Charles - always wrote fluidly) car-crash fiction, and hard to put down, but hideous, like watching an insect writhing on a pin.

Every book written by this woman is a gem, a little miracle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hendra is not a particularly good writer, but his story is a great one ..., 31 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The problem with this book is the grief the reader feels at not having known the divine Father Joe. And then intense frustration at the author for not having moved heaven and earth to spend more time with him. Hendra is not a particularly good writer, but his story is a great one and the episodes featuring Father Joe are deeply moving (elsewhere his prose withers or become so densely knotted as to be unreadable, but that serves well the narrative of how unclear life became when he was away from the monastery: basically, it all coheres).

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous, 14 Dec. 2014

I am so happy to have discovered Dorothy Whipple through these very desirable Persephone imprints. She is a marvel. Her characters are utterly true and she places them in compelling situations, which are never resolved in trite or sentimental ways. A wonderful writer.

1.0 out of 5 stars No charm here, 14 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Starts with considerable promise; but Nicholson doesn't write well enough for this form (I'm sure his magazine columns are good enough) and this began to grate with me. I wanted more from his prose and it just wasn't delivering. Perch Hill's charms didn't come through, and I couldn't stay interested.

Starts brilliantly but completely loses its way to become little more than a grotesque garbled mess.

Utterly compelling, a masterly work. I wanted to start it again the minute I finished it. Harrowing, beautiful, thrilling, redemptive.
