4.0 out of 5 stars good addition to the 'Evil' series!!, 22 April 2008
I genuinely liked the first of the Resident Evil films - Mila Jojavich does a good action heroine - but after being slightly disappointed by the second, I have left this one for a while before watching it.
Although it doesn't have the strong story of the first, It can hold its own as a stand alone effort. The action is pretty much constant, and there are plenty of well choreographed fight scenes.
I think this is a worthy addition to the series, much improved on the second, mainly because the supporting cast are more likeable, but also because less time has been spent trying to over complicate the plot with strange genetic mutations for Alice to deal with!
I would recommend this to fans of R E ,don't be put off by the second, or the extremely short cinema release time this one got - it has definately been sold short!!

Worth watching, especially for some spectacular Zombie killing!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it could have been...., 18 April 2008
I was actually expecting this to be really good, having heard good things, and been intrigued by the trailers. Unfortunately it wasn't all that - it was fairly predictable, the characters were not strong enough to really command interest into their fate, and the end.... well I think I saw that ending in Blade 2 (amongst others!).
I wanted more violence, more story and less of the philosopical ramblings of the 'head' vampire.
On the positive, I thought the concept was good, and the vamps were much improved on previous incarnations. It was well set, and the actors did a good job with what they had.
Worth a look - wait until it drops in price before you buy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Top Dog!!, 18 April 2008
This review is from: I Am Legend [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
Although I was slightly sceptical about watching this film, having heard that it wasn't as good as it's hype, I tried to watch it with an open mind. As a result, I managed to shake off thoughts of familiarity about the script and settle down to enjoy what is in actual fact an excellent piece of entertainment.
The story isn't great, and the 'monsters' are....well, not good, but the filmwork on the city scenes is top notch, and very realistic.
Will Smith does an average job at being slightly crazy/paranoid - he is totally out acted by Sam (the dog!) who does command more empathy from the audience than his human co-star.
I liked this, against my better judgement, it is worth watching as long as you aren't expecting anything oscar quality. I would rent or borrow, rather than buy, cause I don't think it has the quality of story for repeat viewings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Strictly for the Kids, 13 April 2008
After the recent spate of films for kids which contain adult humour too, it is strangely refreshing to view one which is unadulterated small child level. It does have 'cute' value, but for many the high pitched vocals may be slightly stressful. I'm afraid I was pushed to the edge by the mice in 'Babe', and they only clocked up 3 minutes screentime - so this was deeply traumatising!!
The story is basic; fate matches up troubled, unlucky guy with singing chipmunks - fame and fortune follow - unscrupulous record exec tries to spoil the relationship.
My six year old was transfixed for most of the film, although she seemed to lose interest toward the end.
Definately a weekend film for when you want 82 minutes to youself.
The kids will LOVE it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keep your tongue firmly in your cheek!!, 8 April 2008
This review is from: 2001 Maniacs [DVD] (DVD)
Robert Englund is always Freddy and probably always will be, but this is the only film he has been in since where this works as a positive. This is a disgusting, overplayed, gorefest, but it is also hysterically funny with some moments of pure genius.
HOWEVER.... you must watch with an open mind. It is not Oscar material nor does it try to be. It is predictable and it is not well written. It could be considered a bonus that most of the actors have not been seen in anything else, but in a strange quirky way this all works in its favour.
It is oddly transfixing, all stereotypes are displayed and exploited to their fullest extent and if you enjoy it I would definately not lend this with a recommendation to your Mum and Dad, or in fact anyone who doesn't already know that you are a strange, possibly twisted individual!!
I must be, cause I thought it was funny and interesting. Worth a watch. Not worth paying more than £5 for!

4.0 out of 5 stars More Thriller than Horror, 8 April 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not to say that there aren't a few moments in the film that aren't a bit creepy, but on the whole it works better as a psychological thriller than as a horror. I was looking for the elusive 'ultimate Horror' and tried this after watching some promising trailers, and, undeterred by Mr King's poor transition onto celluloid in the past, selected it to join my collection. It is worthy of watching, indeed I will watch it again, but it is not the film which it protests to be in its publicity. For those people who are hard and fast Horror buffs - watch only if you are truly at a loose end, but for those out there who rarely watch horror or who scare easily - this is for perfect for you to get your 'saturday night shock'. Cusack does a good job with the material, his 'madness' is believable (although I wasn't always convinced by his fear), and as remarked on by another reviewer, the use of the Carpenters is extremely effective.
This film has highs and lows, a good effort but not truly scary. Interesting to see a modern release without all the gore!!
Watch it for fun - a good rent or borrow, if you must buy it, any more than £8 and you may feel a bit cheated.

4.0 out of 5 stars skillfully acted, 7 April 2008
Brad Pitt shows his undeniable acting talent once again in his latest, most interesting choice of film role since kalifornia. The story itself is well narrated, allowing the watcher to sympathise with James - both as the killer, and as the family man. The build of betrayal is well developed, and although no empathy can be felt for Ford, his character is acted as completely dislikable - his reasons for his actions are clearly displayed, his jealousy of James and his craving for fame equally to blame. The film is slightly too long at nearly 2 1/2 hrs, but for those who like human interest dramas, this can be excused. If it is action that floats your boat this is probably not the film for you, don't be fooled by the 15 rating - the violence is minimal. I surprised my self by liking this, its not my usual choice (a bit deep!!), worth a watch.

3.0 out of 5 stars second time unlucky, 5 April 2008
This is a luxurious, colourful spectacle, but unfortunately thats all it is. There is no true substance to this film, and it is held together by the performance of Cate Blanchett. If you enjoyed the first film, you will watch this one, but in my opinion the first had a very important ingredient which this one doesn't. Originality.
Watch on a sunday afternoon after lunch. You will fall asleep, but it won't matter cause there's nothing to miss.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mmmmm......., 5 April 2008
I have watched this twice, mainly because I couldn't make up my mind about wether the good points of this film out weigh the bad ones. The CGI is good, (in some places)the story is ok ish. The voice actors vary from the good(anthony hopkins); the bad(Ray Winstone); and the goddam ugly (Angelina Jolie, is that russian? italian??who knows!). All I can surmise is that it COULD be good. It has all the right ingredients - action, story, money spent; but the quantities are all wrong, so it just doesn't cut it. Only watch it for curiosity's sake, and borrow it - don't pay good money for it. Not a classic!!

3.0 out of 5 stars omigod, not Clive Owen, 5 April 2008
This review is from: Shoot 'em Up [DVD] (DVD)
My initial thought about this film is the title of my review, and after watching this oddly transfixing 'action' film, it continued to be the mantra with which I entered into discussions about it. If you take Mr Owen out of the equation - it is a good action film. There is violence-a-plenty, and of course there is no plot to think about, which can be a bonus in these films. HOWEVER.. Clive Owen is NOT an action actor, and does not do himself any favours by trying to cut a niche in this particular genre. For random violence - yes, for an altogether good action film - not really. Watch 'Crank' instead, it's much more satisfying.
