5.0 out of 5 stars Completely different, 29 Dec. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A thoroughly enchanting and enjoyable listen, just so completely different to the usual quo sound. Two things are really noticeable; firstly the quality of the songwriting really stands out and secondly that in their later years the guys voices have really taken on a depth of feeling and tone that really takes your breath away at times.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor man's Reacher, 2 Nov. 2016

A die-hard sort of plot that just bumbles along incoherently and implausibly. Only just worth the 99p I paid.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bernie is tired...., 2 Nov. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There's a theme running throughout the book about Bernie being tired and this could unfortunately also represent the point this series has reached. Might be time to pension him off.

Several factors make this the weakest book yet:
1. A bizarre "red herring" plot twist involving his bridge partner being shot which went nowhere and felt like it was added at the very last minute to put a gun in Bernie's pocket at a convenient moment.
2. Bernie is like a fish out of water in France, he's just no where near as sardonic or ascerbic when not in 1930's or 40's Germany.
3. There is no way that previous incarnations of Bernie would have fallen for the femme fetale trick. Way too non-trusting and suspicious.
4. The author seems very uneasy when trying to portray Bernie's views on homosexuality (a big theme in the book) and in the end settles for a pseudo-liberal "it's ok as long as it's not in my face" kind of attitude which doesn't really work from a) what we know of Bernie's previous attitudes to life and b) the prevailing attitudes of the time.

However, the book is very readable non the less. Every Gunter novel has made me newly aware or reaware of a perhaps lesser known historical episode (in this case the sinking of the Gustloff) and encouraged me to further read around on it. From this perspective Mr Kerr's efforts are to be commended.

If, as is promised in the Bondesq "Bernie will return in..." postscript then if Mr Kerr can find a window somewhere between 1933 and 1945 for which Bernie's wearabouts are as yet unaccounted for then this would I think justify continuing the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, 25 April 2016

Meanders a bit, plenty of the protagonist thoughts (written in the first person) but not a massive amount of action. Of course, it is set in a historically hypothetical time and place so requires a bit of knowledge of the times before you start reading.

Clearly well researched, a superb plot line and a thought provoking highlighting of the moral dilemmas that must have confronted the resistance-minded Germans that existed during world war 2.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish, 19 Jun. 2014

Don't buy this book, there should be no redemption for Hamilton, like Armstrong, a public confession comes too little too late.

Has a decent volume, however the CD player takes forever to turn on and load up a disk. Not a simple press and play job.

An awful lot of bluster, no real facts, more a documentary on the Indian betting market. Could barely finish it.
