A Certain Slant of Light
A Certain Slant of Light
by Laura Whitcomb
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.20

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful novel, 22 Aug. 2013
A Certain Slant of Light is a compelling and beautiful novel, written from the perspective of Helen - a ghost, or `Light' as she calls herself - who has spent many generations alongside various people she calls her `hosts', until one seemingly ordinary day she meets James - a spirit who has found a way of inhabiting the living, breathing body of a boy named Billy. It is a story of a love that changed the life, or death, of Helen and James. Two spirits who were unable to reach heaven, and were left on Earth amongst the living to never be heard or touched again. Two spirits who found and loved each other through the bodies of Billy and Jenny, two school children from different backgrounds, each with their own past and problems. Throughout the novel we catch glimpses of Helen's past that come to her in whilst she is living in Jenny's body. We also see the events of James's distant past and Billy's recent trauma's, and get to know each of the characters in different ways, including the families of both Jenny and Billy.

I have enjoyed reading this book, and have read it around five or six times so far. The voice of Helen allows you to be drawn into her world. You come to understand her worries and frustrations, as well as feel her love for James and her confusion over why she wasn't accepted into heaven when she died. I strongly suggest you read this book as it truly is a wonderful story, and beautifully written. It does have some adult themes, so you may want to consider this if you're a parent buying this book for your child. A beautiful novel from Laura Whitcomb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality notebook, 2 Jun. 2013
So far I have bought around seven Paperblanks notebooks. They are excellent quality, the paper is a good thickness (not too thin or too thick), and the little pocket that is found in the back is very useful for keeping loose things in when you have no glue or sellotape. This particular notebook is very good, it has a marker to keep your page, and the cover looks very nice and the colour changes slightly when you alter its position in light. Paperblanks have never failed to meet my expectations of what a good notebook is, and there is so much choice! Worth the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for film photography work and contact prints, 1 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this item because I wanted somewhere safe and secure to keep my film photography work and negatives where they would be under less risk of being bent or damaged, and where they could be kept together to reduce the risk of losing any pieces of work. Normal ring binders weren't wide enough and I found that the contact prints were sticking out the edge and getting bent when put in my rucksack, so I began my search for a wider ring binder and found this.

It is a good item and is sturdy enough to carry around in a rucksack. It has four rings so the contents are securely in the position you want them to be in, reducing the chance of damage. It is exactly what I was looking for, and I would suggest it to anyone who wants to use it for their film photography work of size A4 or under, or anything that requires a slightly wider ring binder to the usual size (it's wider by about an inch or so). It is perfect for contact prints!

Campbell Biology Plus Mastering Biology Student Access Kit

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and useful textbook, 1 Jun. 2013
I bought this because it was the recommended text for my first year of university. It covered a wide range of topics and is written scientifically, but in a way that is easy to understand for those not used to scientific language (and will help you develop that for essays and reports if you're doing a scientific course). It covers a lot of bases and gives enough information to further your interest in science. If you're not doing a course but want a book that will cover the fundamentals of a lot of scientific areas, then this is your book.
